By joining the protest are BJP and Sena leaders trying to thwart opposition’s attempt to garner mileage out of farm loan waiver issue?
When Congress and NCP disrupted the state assembly proceedings by demanding loan waiver for farmers even Shiv Sena and BJP legislators too joined them. Opposition parties have been trying to corner the BJP led state government for its failure to resolve farmer suicide issue. By joining the protest are BJP and Sena leaders trying to thwart opposition’s attempt to garner mileage out of this issue? Thus a question which arises here is which party is serious about the hardships faced by farmers? The farmer suicide issue has always been raised by every party to remain in limelight but often no steps are taken by the government and opposition to address their concerns. Sena had taken a strong stand and urged the government to tackle farmer suicides. As a result of this, the proceedings of the assembly was disrupted till 12 pm. BJP leaders also joined the protest and said that genuine farmers must get adequate compensation for crop failure.
NCP MLC Dhananjay Munde said, “The government must take initiative to waive loans of farmers. Since last two years 9000 farmers have committed suicide. Why there has been a surge in farmer suicides? The government always gives false assurances about taking right decision to tackle agrarian crisis. Are they waiting for an astrologer to predict the exact timing to offer loan waiver? How many farmers will have to end their lives to wake up the government?.”
“Most of the decisions are taken by the government keeping in mind the elections. Injustice has been met against farmers and the government must intervene to resolve their problems,” he added.
Shiv Sena spokesperson Neelam Gohre said, “The Modi government had announced loan waiver for Uttar Pradesh farmers on the occasion of UP assembly polls. If the government can write off farm loans in UP why can’t similar steps be taken in Maharashtra too? Both states belong to India and the government must not create any discrimination. Even Uddhav Thackeray too is in favour of loan waiver. Farmers are expecting the government to intervene in this matter and provide them financial assistance. Many farmers have ended their lives due to rising debt burden hence their families are suffering hardships.”
On the other hand, Maharashtra Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar clarified that government is serious about the hardships faced by farmers. He said, “The Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had last year announced that farmer’s loan will be waived off. Our government is taking positive steps in this regard and soon results will be visible. Opposition parties have a tendency to attack the government over farmer suicide issue.”
