Oscar Pistorius to be released this week after serving 10 months in prison

After spending 10 months in prison for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, Oscar Pistorius is set to be released on Friday.

Ironically, Pistorius’ release comes during a period when South Africa is celebrating “Women’s Month”.

At one end a devoted band of international supporters are backing the release of Pistorius, on the other, many South Africans are disheartened about the athlete’s release.

However, the ‘Blade runner’ could find himself back behind bars soon, depending on the outcome of the state’s appeal of his conviction, which is due to be heard in November by a panel of judges at the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein.

Prosecutors are arguing that the 28-year-old should have been convicted of murder, challenging last year’s ruling by Justice Thokozile Masipa as being too lenient.

According to a report in The Independent, if the culpable homicide conviction is overturned, Pistorius would face a minimum sentence of 15 years in prison.

The state has until August 28, a week after Pistorius’s release date, to file application papers outlining its appeal.

In the meantime, the supporters of Pistorius have launched an online campaign to “welcome him home and back to society”.
