Maharashtra government on Wednesday said that committees have been formed in every district across the state to ensure that cases against political workers for carrying out social agitations are withdrawn.
“After a cabinet decision was taken to take back cases against those engaged in political agitation, we had informed the police personnel and the relevant authorities about it. Committees have now been formed in all districts, that are working towards the release of people involved in agitation,” Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis informed the Legislative Council.
He said that the state government is periodically in touch with these committees and they have been asked to file a status report every month.
“We have asked these committees to submit a report to us every month about how many sittings have they held in a particular month and how many people have been released after considerations,” Fadnavis said during the Question Hour.
The state cabinet had in January passed the home department’s proposal to withdraw police cases against thousands of political workers for carrying out political and social agitations from May 2005 to November 1, 2014.
Fadnavis said that losses amounting to Rs 5 lakh during these agitations will be recovered from the perpetrators and thereafter, cases against them will be taken back.
“Cases will not be taken back if they have damaged property worth more than Rs 5 lakh, or if they have indulged in activities like stealing money or property,” he said.
