A video purportedly showing Peoples Democratic Party MLA Ashraf Mir firing several rounds from an AK-47 assault rifle to celebrate his victory against National Conference leader Omar Abdullah from Sonawar Assembly seat in Jammu and Kashmir has surfaced on Friday.

Mir reportedly fired several shots outside his residence while he was celebrating his victory with his supporters.

However, Mir later denied having fired shots and accused his political rivals of producing a doctored video.

“I did not fire any rounds … There was a commotion following my victory and the rifle of one of my PSOs (personal security officer) fell on ground which I retrieved and handed it back to him,” said Mir.

The PDP leader bagged 14283 votes, as compared to Omar, who received 9500 votes.

Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Sunil Sharma said that gun culture should not be encouraged.

Omar Abdullah had earlier congratulated Mir on Twitter.

“Congratulations to Ashraf Mir for his victory in Sonwar. I wish him and the people all good luck for the next 6 years. He’s now my local MLA,” tweeted Omar.

While the PDP secured 28 seats, the BJP won an impressive 25 in the 87-member J&K Assembly. NC won 15, Congress 12 and Others managed 7 seats.

Meanwhile, the prospects of PDP forging an alliance with the BJP to form a government in Jammu and Kashmir has brightened.

The reports of a BJP-PDP tie up is doing the rounds after BJP general secretary Ram Madhav on Thursday evening held two separate rounds of talks with senior PDP leader Muzaffar Hussain Baig.
