Congress and other political parties have criticised the BJP for using Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Madison Square Garden speech in New York in the party’s advertisement on TV to woo voters for the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly polls on Monday.

The Opposition parties alleged that a few Marathi news channels are repeatedly telecasting Modi’s speech as a BJP advertisement at prime time slots.

While the Congress party today approached the Election Commission to lodge complaint in this regard, the NCP called it a ‘misuse’ of official machinery.

“When Modi went to the US he wasn’t a BJP leader. Hence, his speech should not have been used for election campaign. He has same responsibility as us to maintain PMO’s dignity,” said NCP chief Sharad Pawar, reports stated.

MNS chief Raj Thackeray has also slammed the BJP for using PM’s speech for poll campaign and has questioned EC’s silence in the matter.

Meanwhile, the BJP has attacked the Congress for taking up the matter to EC.

“Irony that instead of taking pride for being an Indian, out of rush Cong has complained to EC about PM’s Maddison Square speech,” said BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra.
