Tributes were paid to former Union minister Pramod Mahajan on his 11th death anniversary, with BJP leaders in Maharashtra lauding his contribution in the party’s growth.

“BJP today has emerged as a well-organised and modern party. The credit for this modern outlook of the party goes to a large extent to late Mahajan,” BJP legislator Raj Purohit said.

He was speaking at a meeting held at the party’s office to pay tributes to Mahajan, who died on May 3, 2006.

“Mahajan always welcomed new ideas and latest technology and used it for the party’s growth. He has a major role in the growth of BJP,” Purohit, a former Mumbai BJP president, said.

Many state BJP leaders took to Twitter to pay their tributes to Mahajan.

Born on October 30, 1949, Mahajan was a member of the Atal Behari Vajpayee-led ministry. He was the Defence minister in Vajpayee’s 13-day ministry and after BJP returned to power in 1998, he was appointed as advisor to the Prime Minister.

He also handled various ministries including information and broadcasting, parliamentary affairs, water resources and food processing.

On the morning of April 22, 2006, Mahajan s estranged brother Pravin shot him in Mumbai following a dispute. Majahan died after struggling for life for 13 days in a Mumbai hospital.
