Priyanka Gandhi likely to be made Congress General Secretary

In a move that can boost the morale of dejected Congress’ cadre, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, daughter of UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, might be appointed as the party’s general secretary on Monday, reports claimed on Sunday.

According to reports, for the past three months, party vice president Rahul Gandhi has been trying to rope in Priyanka into active politics by making her an integral part of Congress.

Rahul Gandhi’s efforts are now being taken into consideration by the party’s top brass, revealed sources.

The development comes amidst controversy over Rahul Gandhi’s absence during the Budget Session and demands that he be elevated to a higher post in the party. His absence has drawn critical remarks from the party’s rivals.

Meanwhile, senior party leader AK Antony said that Rahul Gandhi, who has taken a break from Parliament, will return “stronger and more energetic”.

The former defence minister defended the Gandhi scion’s move which has drawn flak from many quarters.

A Congress worker on Wednesday had released pictures of Rahul Gandhi in Uttarakhand, but the Congress refused to comment.

However, there may be a deeper and more unsettling reason for Rahul’s present farewell to active politics than the explanation that he has gone away to mull over the factors which led to the Congress’ recent electoral reverses.

As per reports, Rahul Gandhi has held extensive consultations with party leaders and workers over the past few months to evolve a road map for the party’s revival.

Sources had said earlier that there is a view in the party that Rahul should get a free hand to implement his ideas and he should take responsibility as party president.
