Raj Bhavan sets a precedent for other official buildings

Maharashtra’s Raj Bhavan became first official building in India to receive an ISO 9001:2008 certification. Raj Bhavan is the official residence of the Governor of a state. I think all official buildings in India should set an example by receiving these types of International Standard Certificate. Our country’s image in the eyes of foreigners is negative. They think India is a dirty place, thanks to foreign media and Hollywood films. These types of certification at some levels shade the negative image of the nation.

Having the right management systems at an organisation can go a long way to highlight your efficiency. A certification would show the quality processes that are in place within the system and the amount of care taken for each step in the cycle. It’s quite the same case with the Raj Bhavan in Mumbai which has received an ISO certificate for having brilliant management systems. In the year 2010, Rashtrapati Bhavan, an official residence of President of India also received ISO certification.

The Governor of Maharashtra K Sankaranarayanan accepted the ISO 9001:2008 certification. While it goes on to show the amount of efficient processes imbibed in the system, the Governor was also quick to mention that the standard of services has been set and maintaining it was the duty of all officers and staff.

Raj Bhavan is situated in south Mumbai on a lush green 50 acres and is surrounded by the Arabian Sea on three sides, with sprawling heritage buildings dotting the complex. With such infrastructure, having a quality system is quite challenging even with the benefits at bay.

Out of the many benefits of the ISO 9001 certification, the Raj Bhavan would rely on having increased credibility and providing confidence on consistency, effectiveness and the efficiency of the entire system. One must remember that such a certification would never be possible unless there is seamless integration between internal processes and consistency on all fronts.

In Mumbai, there are quite a few top ISO Certification bodies like BSI Group India Pvt Ltd, ZOC Technologies Pvt Ltd, CDG Certification Limited & Indian Register Quality Systems.

Originally, it was a hunting lodge for the British rulers, later it was converted into a summer residence and gradually it became the official residence of the governor.

The complex, boasting of its own private beach, has been officially housing the residence and secretariats of governors — formerly British, and post-Independence Indian — right from 1885 onwards.
Over the years, it has hosted both Indian and foreign dignitaries in one or more of the bungalows which are richly decorated with carvings, fittings and furniture, valuable paintings and other artefacts.
However, it is not easy to obtain this certificate. A quality assessment needs to be done on all fronts before a certification can be done and achieving such a goal would bring about huge dividends for any business or organisation.

ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is the world’s largest developer of voluntary International Standards. International Standards give state of the art specifications for products, services and good practice, helping to make industry more efficient and effective. Developed through global consensus, they help to break down barriers to international trade.
