Rupinder, Raghunath score braces as India thrash Scotland 6-2

Fresh from their 3-1 victory over Wales in their inagural match on Friday, Sardar Singh-led India defeated hosts Scotland 6-2 n the group stage of the 2014 Commonwealth Games at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre.

India, who appeared lethargic in the opener, put up a much improved performance in their second game, and looked keen to attack from the onset. Their moves bore fruit as early as in the sixth minute of play, when Gurbaj Singh scoring a brilliant field goal.

India kept up the offensive, and sounded the board again in the 23rd minute, this time through a penalty corner that V.R. Raghunath converted with ease.

Leading 2-0 going into the second half, India refused to relent, and were duly rewarded in the 37th minute with Rupinder Pal Singh converting another penalty corner to make it 3-0.

In the 40th minute, Gurwinder Singh Chandi added one more as he brilliantly struck past the defence to sound the board, and five minutes later, Raghunath scored his second of the match, again through a penalty corner.

India struck again in the 48th minute through another penalty corner and this time through Rupinder.

Trying to break through the Indian defence, Scotland finally managed to open the scoring in the 56th minute when K. Bain scored through a field goal.

In the 69th minute, the home team reduced the margin by converting the penalty corner through Nicholas Parkes to make it 6-2.

India will now take on 2010 winners Australia on Tuesday. The Aussies had blanked India 8-0 to clicnh the gold at National Stadium four years back.
