San Bernadino shooting: 14 people killed; suspects identified, both dead

Police identified the two suspects, a man and a woman, who died in an exchange of fire with police following the mass shooting that killed 14 people in California.

San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said police no longer believed a third suspect was at large: “We’re pretty comfortable that the two shooters that went into the building are the two shooters deceased on San Bernardino Avenue.”

“The first one is Syed Rizwan, last name Farook. He is 28 years old. I am told that he is US-born,” Burguan said. “The person that was with him is a female. Her name is Tashfeen, last name Malik. She is 27 years old.”

Wednesday’s attack took place during a holiday party being held at Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino, a huge facility that provides services to people with disabilities.

Soon after Farook’s name became public, his brother-in-law Farhan Khan called a press conference where he said he last talked to Farook a week ago.

“The reason I am here is to express [for] my family…How sad they are for what happened,” said Khan, adding that he was very sad over lives lost in the shooting.

“I have no idea why he would he do something like this. I have absolutely no idea. I am in shock myself.” Khan said when asked whether Farook was religious.

Khan stood alongside leaders of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, who condemned the violence.

The US has witnessed over 300 incidents of shooting this year.

The incident marks the deadliest mass shooting in the US since 26 people were killed at a school in Newton, Connecticut in 2012.
