Sania Mirza Keeps India Flag Flying high in the World of Tennis

Sania-MirzaIndian tennis ace, Sania Mirza has entered the mixed doubles final at the 2014 US Open. The 27-year-old partnered with Brazilian Bruno Soares to beat the Taiwanese-British pair of Yung Jan Chan and Ross Hutchins in three sets.

Entering the season’s final Grand Slam competition as the top seeded pair, Mirza and Soares fought ealry jitters to win the first set 7-5. However the duo conceded the second set to the unseeded opponents losing 4-6. Their experience helped them pulled out the decider in 10-7 at Flushing Meadows.

Soares, 32, won the title in 2012 with Russian Ekaterina Makarova. It’s his only Grand Slam title so far, while his Indian partner has won mixed doubles titles at the 2009 Australian Open and the 2012 French Open.

In the final, they will play American Abigail Spears and Mexican Santiago Gonzalez. Sania is also in the women’s doubles semifinal along with her Zimbabwean partner Cara Black. The third seeded pair will play Martina Hingis of Switzerland and Flavia Pennetta of Italy for a berth in the final.
