The Supreme Court on Thursday issued a notice to Centre on Uttarakhand Governor Aziz Qureshi’s plea questioning government’s nudge to quit the post.

The apex court directed the Narendra Modi-led government to file its response within 6 weeks on Qureshi’s petition.

The SC also referred the plea to 5-judge Constitution Bench.

The top court’s order comes after the petition was filed on Wednesday. Aziz in his petition has contended that no one other than the President can ask him to quit. He also cited a apex court ruling that, a Governor is not an employee of the central government.

Many Governors appointed during Congress-led UPA rule had quit after BJP-led NDA came to power on May 16.

After NDA government came to power Governors of Goa, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana had to resign.

While, Ram Naik was appointed as UP Governor, Om Prakash Kohli, Keshari Nath Tripathi, Balram Das, and Kaptan Singh Solanki were sworn-in as Goa, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh and Haryana Governors respectively.
