A senior leader of the rebel Kurdistan Workers` Party (PKK) has said that Iraq must stay united if it wants to defeat the dreaded Islamic State group that has wreaked havoc in the country.
Cemil Bayik, co-founder of the PKK and field commander of the organisation, warned that it would be “very dangerous” if Iraq were partitioned.
He said that the war in Iraq would intensify and the threat of Da’esh (IS) to smaller communities will become greater unless the Sunnis and Kurds worked together to counter the threat posed by the fascist group, The Guardian reported.
He said that if the communities stayed united against the IS, then they could sort out their differences at a later stage through dialogue.
Bayik said the PKK hoped to be removed from the list of terrorist organisations, adding that the terrorist label was a “great injustice” and that the PKK`s struggle against the “savagery” of IS proved it was undeserved, the report added.
