There has been a significant rise in tiger population in Maharashtra, the state Legislature was informed.
“Thanks to increased vigilance, there has been a significant rise in the population of tigers in the Pench and Tadoba Tiger Projects,” Governor C Vidyasagar Rao said in his address to the Legislature as the Budget session got underway.
“It is proposed to create Special Tiger Protection Force (STPF) in Melghat and Navegaon-Nagzira Tiger Reserves on the same lines,” he said.
With a view to reduce human-wildlife conflict, nearly 650 families from seven villages located in the tiger reserves and wildlife sanctuary have been rehabilitated in 2014-15. Modern technology and ecological management measures will be harnessed to further reduce this conflict, he said.
“Financial assistance in case of human death due to attack by wild animals has been increased from Rs. five lakh to Rs. eight lakh with effect from January 15, 2015,” he said.
The government has decided to establish the Bamboo Training and Research Centre at Chichpalli in Chandrapur district, Rao said.
