Strike without substance

The nationwide strike called by trade unions across India last week had brought some parts of the country to a standstill, while the impact of the Bharat Bandh has been minimal in most states. Transport organisations, banks, government offices, commercial organisations and factories were affected in some places as an estimated 150 million workers supported the 12-hour strike. The strike will cause an estimated loss of Rs 25,000 crore.

In most states, government banks and offices remained closed. Public transport remained unaffected in most states except in Kerala where the government is running special buses. Schools, colleges and private banks were open across the country. Nurses and radiologists had separately announced an indefinite strike, but have said they will attend to emergency cases. In Mumbai and Delhi buses were running and essentials like power and water supply were not affected. Strike incurs a huge loss and the man power wasted could not be got back for constructive purposes.
