A suicide attack in Afghanistan’s Zabul province targeting council building has left dozens injured, reports said Monday.

According to Pajhwok Afghan News, 68 people including women and children have been injured in the incident that took place in front of the provincial council office in Qalat City, the provincial capital around 11:15 am.

Among those injured were four provincial council members.

Zabul acting Governor Massoud Bakhtawar confirmed the incident adding that a truck was used to stage the suicide attack, added the report.

Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Taliban had in April launched “spring offensive” after which it has stepped up the frequency of attacks and targeted many government buildings.

The Taliban have been fighting the Afghan government and its foreign backers since their hard-line Islamist government was ousted from power by US-backed Afghan forces in 2001.
