Thane police crime branch seizes ivory tusk from two people

The Crime Branch of Thane police seized ivory tusk from two people, who had brought it to the city to sell it, police said.

Acting on a tip-off, Crime Branch officials kept a vigil and apprehended two people near the Thane railway station, DCP (Crime) Parag Manere told reporters here.

Police identified them as Ramchandra Krishnappa Latthe (33) of Hirkodi in Karnataka and Rajendra Sopan Jadhav, (52) of Anand Nagar in Pune.

ACP Crime Nagesh Lohar said that the duo were produced before the local magistrate who remanded them to police custody upto December 18, 2014, he said.

According to the police, the gang comprises more members who poach animals, extract ivory and sell it for good price.

Meanwhile, forest officials confirmed that the seized tusks are genuine.

Those apprehended have been charged under Section 9, Section 39, Section 44, Section 48(a), Section 49(a) and Section 51 of the World Life Protection Act of 1972, he said.

The seized tusk was brought from southern states, police said.
