Thank You PM Modi, but it’s too late

Muslim groups and leaders who left themselves discriminated after Narendra Modi was elected as Indian Prime Minister welcomed his comment on Indian Muslims that they will “live for India and die for India”. I also appreciate the statement made by him, but it’s too late. If Modi would have said it prior to General Election, which was conducted in April-May this year, he might have won more seats. However, his statement came after his party have lost maximum seats in by-polls election, that’s why it seems that this ‘quote’ is mere a political statement.

Maharashtra and Haryana – will witness Assembly polls next month and other three states – Bihar, Jammu & Kashmir and Jharkhand – will go for polls in 2015. All these states are crucial for BJP. It might be a political statement but I hail Modi for this statement.

The by poll results show that there is no final word in politics. It is possible for an apparently overpowering political tide to retreat, and for parties like the Congress and the SP, which appeared to be down and out, to make a comeback, perhaps to their own surprise.

The Congress will be delighted because it has shown that despite the bickering at the top between what Rahul Gandhi calls “multiple voices”, there is still life in the 128-year-old party. Evidently, at the ground level, the party does have leaders and followers who can benefit from the BJP’s missteps.

The SP’s rejuvenation, too, will be a matter of considerable satisfaction to the party considering how its poor record of governance under a young and inexperienced chief minister has long been held against it. Yet, if the voters have chosen to forgive him, the reason probably is the BJP’s and the Sangh parivar’s flirting with a communal agenda which held up the unnerving prospect of continuing tension and violence.

In an exclusive with Fareed Zakaria on CNN, PM Modi said, “My understanding is that they are doing injustice towards the Muslims of our country. If anyone thinks Indian Muslims will dance to their tune, they are delusional. Indian Muslims will live for India, they will die for India – they will not want anything bad for India.”

Why is Modi saying this? Indian Muslims have always been patriotic and they do not need any certificate for this.

It is very much true that Indian Muslims or other countries Muslims will not wage war against their own country. Prophet Muhammad (SAWW) is reported to have said: ‘Love for one’s country is part of faith’.

If one is Muslim then he has to follow the path of Holy Prophet (SAWW). Islam does not draw any distinction between loyalty to one’s faith and nation. Muslims who enjoy the liberty to practice and preach their faith are required to honour the government of their country, and to live as decent, law-abiding citizens.

For the first thirteen years of his ministry, Prophet Muhammad (SAWW) and his followers were persecuted citizens in Makkah, yet within that period they never raised arms against their oppressors as they were still able to fulfill certain religious duties. Muslims are therefore required to live by this noble teaching and remain loyal to their country.

Modi should instead convince those within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and other Hindu leaders who have been spewing venom against the community. If the prime minister is really interested in advocating the cause, he should go and tell the same to Yogi Adityanath, Sakshi Maharaj, Varun Gandhi, Praveen Togadia and Pramod Muthalik. However, Thank You Modiji for considering us as patriotic. We were, we are and we will always be with our nation.
