The City Pride theatre in Pune on Friday cancelled launch shows of the much-awaited movie ‘Bajirao Mastani’ anticipating protests by the Bharatiya Janata Party.
The theatre has cancelled three shows of the film releasing.
There are no reports of the movie’s screening being cancelled in any other theatre.
But, several multiplex and single-screen theatres in the city have sought protection from the police in order to screen the movie directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
The BJP and its youth wing have alleged that the movie depicts a “distorted portrayal” of the Peshwa and have threatened an agitation against its screening.
Several theatres had halted advance bookings for the film and said tickets would be sold only on the day the movie is released.
Protests against the film started ever since its trailer and song videos were released.
Protesters have said the historical facts concerning the life of Bajirao Peshwa have been distorted in the film.
