In a unique innovation, two engineering students have devised a washing machine that can be run without the use of electricity and can also be used to charge a mobile phone.
The duo’s dream of making a simple and cost effective washing machine stemmed out from watching their mothers spend hours washing clothes when they were kids.
Both Arvind and Deepak are final year students in Ashoka Institute of Technology and Management in Paharia area in Varanasi.
Their ingenious model has pedals attached to it which has to be used while cleaning clothes.
“The machine can be operated by pedaling just like a bicycle. The rotation of pedals kicks the bearing in action. The force then produced makes the clothes shift and twirl inside. By using the set up for 20-30 minutes, a dozen clothes can be cleaned,” explains Deepak.
He also highlights the health benefits of using this washing machine.
“When you are pedaling, you are actually doing physical activity. You will be able to burn 100-120 calories of you are pedaling for 25-30 minutes,” he says.
