Two people including an officer of the Thane police commissionerate has been booked for alleged illegal transport of beef, police sources said.

The Thane police stated in a daily report that on October 30, 2014, Upendra Dhake had complained to the police that something was leaking from a passing truck.

From documents found on the truck driver, it was revealed that the truck was supposed to be transporting beef to the Goregaon-based Mayur Cold Storage for export.

However, the truck was proceeding towards Vashi to which Dhake objected and urged the police sub-inspector B G Gorde to register an offence against driver Ayub Murtaza.

The police officer did not take the matter seriously and told the complainant not to teach him the law. The truck was let off without any offence being registered, the complaint said.

The complaint alleged that both the police inspector and driver Ayub Murtaza connived to ensure that the truck driver transported beef illegally.

Police sources said that based on court directives, an offence under Section 429 of the Indian Penal Code, besides Section 5, Section 6, Section 7, Section 9 and Section 11 of the Maharashtra Animals Preservation Act, 1976 has been registered against the duo.

Police inspector S K Jadhav of the Crime Branch is investigating the case, police sources said.
