A Sunday picnic of 13 youngsters from Mumbai turned tragic after two of them drowned in the Bhushi dam reservoir near Lonavala. According to the police, the locals along with officials fished out bodies of Bhupen Dhiraj Bhandari, 20, and Aniket Hande, 20, both from Andheri.

The Lonavala city police said, a group of 13 students had come to Bhushi dam for a weekend picnic. Both Bhandari and Hande ventured into waters but failed to gauge the depth of the reservoir, said a police official.

The group arrived in two vehicles at around 11am and immediately went to Bhushi dam, which overflows during monsoon. By around 12:30pm, the police received a call informing them about the death of two youngsters.

Despite repeated warnings after a number of deaths at Bhushi dam, many picnic goers often turn a blind eye to the risk involved in entering into the water. Some have lost their lives due to the same reason. Since last month alone, four deaths have been reported at Bhushi dam.

Meanwhile, the administration has erected warning signboards to discourage enthusiastic tourists from venturing into the water.
