‘We aim to have accident free roads’: Minister

Maharashtra government will adopt safety and precautionary measures while constructing roads in order to have ‘accident free roads’ in near future, State Public Works Minister Eknath Shinde said.

Inaugurating the 26th Road Safety Public Awareness Campaign of Thane Regional Transport office, Shinde said that his department would ensure better road conditions like proper dividers, signals, signages, speed breakers and turns which will contribute substantially in reducing number of accidents.

He said the government would give representation to personnel from the RTO department in the committee that takes decision on constructing of roads in the state.

Shinde, who is also the guardian minister of Thane district, said even Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis was concerned about issue of road safety.

He said that according to accident data, more youths die in road accident and hence they should be more cautious while driving and follow traffic rules as they are the asset of the country.

Shinde on the occasion asked RTO officials to approve only those vehicle (fitness approval of vehicle) to ply on roads which meet all safety standards and norms.

The minister also said he would demand for greater funds for road safety from the higher authorities.
