Nilesh had earlier said he would contest as a rebel candidate against Jadhav, the minister for water resources, from Guhagar in Konkan region.
The announcement had upset NCP, Congress’s ally.
“I have never been against a party. My fight has been against a certain individual. Congress has given a big responsibility to Narayan Rane (as campaign committee chief in Maharashtra) and I have to help him in fulfilling it. I do not want him (Rane senior) to face problems because of me, so I have decided against contesting as independent candidate from Guhagar,” Nilesh said.
He added that he had not asked the party leadership to give him any other seat.
“If I am not contesting, it does not mean I won’t campaign against Jadhav. He had campaigned against me during the Lok Sabha elections and I will campaign against him now. I will not rest until he is defeated,” Nilesh said.
“Certain elements in NCP are trying to create trouble for the Rane family. I will reveal their names soon,” he said.
