At least 11 people died and 30 others were injured after a private bus coming from Vizag to Hyderabad fell into a river channel under the bridge near Moolapadu village under Penuganchiprolu mandal in Krishna district.
Police said the toll could go up as the front portion of the bus was badly mangled and many of the 60 passengers were still trapped inside the wreckage.
The bus was on way to Hyderabad in Telangana from Bhubaneshwar in Odisha when the accident took place at around 5.30am.
The private Volvo bus with 44 people on board was on its way to Hyderabad from Bhubaneswar when the mishap occurred between two culverts on the highway, police said. The passengers were fast asleep during the accident.
The injured have been taken to the Nandigama Government Hospital, said reports.
Of the 30 injured people, 10 are critical, said a report. The bus, Diwakar Travels, was owned by Telugu Desam Party (TDP) MLA from Tadipatri JC Prabhakar Reddy.
Most of the passengers are from Visakhapatnam, Bhubaneswar, Srikakulam and Hyderabad. This is the second major incident involving Diwakar Travels agency owned by Telugu Desam Party MP from Anantapur J C Diwakar Reddy.
According to Deputy Transport Commissioner E Meera Prasad, the bus was at a speed of around 110 kmph at NH 16 and crashed against a 3-ft high wall before tumbling down 22-ft below the bridge. Transport minister Sidda Raghava Rao has ordered a probe into the accident.
