In a disappointing and sad incident, 17 people including a six-month-old baby lost their life while they were travelling to Mumbai via Mumbai-Pune Expressway on Sunday morning. 25 were reportedly injured. All the injured have been admitted in the nearby MGM hospital.
A Swift had stopped on the side of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway as the driver was changing a punctured tyre. An Innova car had stopped in the first lane to help the driver. A luxury bus, coming from Satara, crashed into the Innova and the Desire and fell into a 20-feet deep ditch on the left of the Expressway.
Four people were in the Innova at the time of the accident, and they have sustained injuries. One passenger who was in the Swift car is dead. A majority of the passengers injured and dead were travelling in the luxury bus.
A police official said that prima facie it seems that the bus driver attempted to steer away from the parked cars but lost control and rammed into the vehicles.
The driver of a swift desire car was changing a punctured tyre and an Innova stopped to help him.
Rescue teams rushed to the spot where the mangled remains of the three vehicles bore a tragic reminder of the unfortunate and gruesome mishap.
Police said that the bus driver may have failed to see the tail-lights of the cars owing to a cloudy morning.
