21 people killed in separate road mishaps in Manipur

As many as 10 people were killed after a bus fell into a stream in Manipur’s Senapati on Monday.

25 others sustained injuries in the accident.

The accident took place between Makan and Chakhumai area along the Imphal-Dimapur National Highway.

The injured were rushed to the nearby Assam Rifles Maram Hospital and other hospitals in the vicinity.

Eight persons were killed and six others were injured when the vehicle they were travelling in rolled down and fell into a 300 mt deep gorge at Khongsang in Tamenglong district, police said.

The vehicle was on its way to Imphal when the mishap occurred in the afternoon on Jiribam-Imphal National Highway, they said.

Police said a tourist bus from Dimapur fell into a stream between Makhan and Chakhumai area at around 3.30 AM killing 10 passengers. 38 others were also reported to be injured in the mishap.

In a separate incident, a truck driver was killed in a third road accident at Lairouching in Senapati district this afternoon.

Investigations are underway to ascertain the cause of the mishaps, a senior police officer said.

Hospital sources said that the condition of several injured persons is critical. The passenger bus had left Dimapur in Nagaland on Sunday night and it was scheduled to arrive at Imphal on Monday morning.

However while negotiating the wobbly mountain bridge at Chakumai in Senapati district along the NH 2 the bus having registration No. MNO 4A 9503 lost control and plunged in the deep gorge.

Governor Najma Heptullah has condoled the deaths of the passengers. The Manipur government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs. Two lakhs to each to the families of the 21 dead persons. Rs. 50,000 would be given to the injured ones.
