6.8 Myanmar quake’s tremors felt in Guwahati, Kolkata, NCR, Patna

A major earthquake of 6.8 magnitude hit Myanmar on Wednesday causing strong tremors in northeastern India in West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, Orissa and Jharkhand.

6.8 Myanmar quake-AVStrong tremors were felt in Guwahati and Kolkata, where buildings were evacuated. People from Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Dumka and other parts of the Jharkhand also felt the tremors.Tremors were felt in northern India in Delhi and in the NCR region and in Bhubaneswar, Orissa.

There were no immediate reports of damage to property or life.

“I was preparing evening snacks when boxes stashed in the kitchen shelf started trembling. It was my first experience of earthquake. It was very frightening,” said Priya Devi of Jharkhand.

Nepal Bangladesh and Bhutan, as well, felt the quake.

According to initial reports, the earthquke’s epicentre is northwest of Mandalay.

According to the National Centre of Seismology, the earthquake occurred at 7:25 pm at a depth of 134 km.

Reports about the quake’s magnitude vary.

The US Geological Survey said the earthquake had a magnitude of 7.0.
