Maharashtra Medical Education Minister Vinod Tawde said strict action would be taken against illegal pathology laboratories and a new law would be enacted with appropriate amendments in the Maharashtra Paramedical Council Act of 2011.

Replying to a debate on the issue raised in the State Legislative Assembly through a calling attention notice by Vijay Waddetiwar (Congress) and others, Tawde said there are about 3,000-5,000 illegal labs out of which 60 to 70 per cent are in urban areas.

He said there is no legal provision to act against unauthorised labs at present.

“It was because of this that the Maharashtra Paramedical Council Act was passed in 2011. The bill has been sent to the President for approval. However, the Centre has suggested some amendments. The state government is ready to make the necessary amendments and resend it to the Centre. Opinion of the law and judiciary department has also been sought,” he said.

Tawde said stern action would be taken against bogus pathology labs as permission were sought on 10th and 12th educational qualifications.
