Maharashtra’s former Advocate General Shrihari Aney celebrated his 66th birthday in a bizarre manner by carving out Vidarbha region from the cake containing Maharashtra’s map. Political parties criticised Aney and said that he is promoting divisive politics. Shiv Sena which is always in favour of Akhand (united) Maharashtra came down heavily on Aney and challenged him to divide Gujarat. The Vidarbha issue has become the latest bone of contention between the Sena and BJP as the former is opposed to the bifurcation of Maharashtra. Aney who had created a controversy by demanding statehood for Vidarbha and Marathwada had to step down from the post of Advocate General after opposition parties demanded his resignation in the house. However Aney has remained firm on his stand for separate Vidarbha and said that he will continue to fight for statehood of the region. According to him injustice has been meted against Vidarbha and Marathwada as these regions continue to remain underdeveloped.

Nitesh Rane1-AVCongress MLA Nitesh Rane said, “Aney is indulging in divisive politics. Let us see how many birthdays will he celebrate in this manner. This is an insult to the people of Maharashtra. If you can bifurcate a state by cutting a cake then everybody would have followed this tactics. We will oppose the division of Maharashtra. Instead of dividing the state the government should try to merge Belgaum and Karwar with Maharashtra.”

NeelamShiv Sena MLC Neelam Gore said, “I challenge Mr Aney to display courage and divide Gujarat in the same manner. He is trying to become an agent for dividing the state. There are several other important issues which needs to be addressed on priority basis instead of focussing on dividing Maharashtra. People like Aney are trying to weaken Maharashtra by trying to divide the state.”

“Instead of speaking about separation of Vidarbha, the BJP should concentrate on developing the region. The CM should work towards fulfilling the dreams of 105 martyrs who sacrificed their lives for ‘Akhand (united) Maharashtra,” said a  Sena party worker on the condition of anonymity.

The cake cut by Aney was shaped as Maharashtra, with all parts like Vidarbha, Konkan, Marathwada and Western Maharashtra shown in different colours. After blowing the candles, Shreehari got to carve Vidarbha out of Maharashtra. This ingenuous cake was presented to him by some lawyer friends practising in Nagpur High Court where the cake was cut.
