BJP Announces 4 Candidates Including Ex Gujrat IAS Officer For Biennial UP Legislative Council Polls

On Friday the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced the names of four candidates including former Gujarat bureaucrat Arvind Kumar Sharma, for the upcoming biennial polls for the 12 Legislative Council seats in Uttar Pradesh, which will fall vacant later this month. Elections to 12 Legislative Council seats will take place on January 28.

Besides Sharma, the other candidates which are nominated for the upcoming election are Swatantra Dev Singh, Dr. Dinesh Sharma and Laxman Prasad Acharya.

According to the statement issued by the BJP, “The central election committee of the Bharatiya Janata Party has approved the names of Swatantra Dev Singh, Dr Dinesh Sharma, Laxman Prasad Acharya and Arvind Kumar Sharma as candidates for the upcoming biennial election for Legislative Council in UP.”

Swatantra Dev Singh is the President of the UP unit of BJP and Dr Dinesh Sharma is the Deputy Chief Minister of the state, mentioned the statement.

A close source to the development reveals that Sharma likely to inducted into the UP cabinet as he will be considered as a candidate for an important position in the central government.

The former IAS officer of Gujarat had worked with Prime Minister Narendra Modi from 2001 to 2020. Reportedly, Sharma had served his services in the Gujarat chief minister’s office and later in the PMO.

According to the Election Commission of India, the term of 12 members of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council elected by the Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) is expiring on January 30, 2021.

The cunting of votes will be done one hour after the completion of the polls.

Nominations for the biennial polls can be filed till January 18 and scrutiny of the same will be held on January 19. The withdrawal of names can be done till January 21.
