Tariq-AnwarThe Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government in Maharashtra, accusing the party of being unable to tackle the sudden increase in the number of suicides by Marathwada farmers.

“When the Congress-NCP was in power, there were frequent allegations against us of never paying heed to farmers’ plights in Marathwada. The BJP had made tall claims during the assembly elections. Yet the number of suicides by farmers is increasing daily,” said NCP leader Tariq Anwar.

“The state government should provide aid in trying to make the arid Marathwada region more water-inductive to reduce farmer distress. A lot of mental support is required to help farmers pursue orchard farming there. This issue requires immediate attention,” he added.

The Marathwada region has seen a sudden growth of suicides by farmers, with reports stating that the toll amounts to around 300 in 2015 alone.
