To give a thrust to the ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’, the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) on Tuesday inaugurated bio-digester toilets at two places in the megapolis.
Shiv Sena MP Rahul Shewale inaugurated the toilets at Dharavi and Mahim, in the localities mainly surrounded by slum dwellers. “These two toilets have 30 seating blocks at a time and the civic body is planning to come up with many more bio-digester toilets in each ward, mainly in the slum areas,” said Assistant Municipal Commissioner of MCGM’s N-North ward Ramakant Biradar.
“These toilets never smell foul and need less water to flush and keep it clean. More importantly, such bio-toilets do not need connection with sewerage line and do well without septic tank,” he added.
The toilets were constructed with the funds provided under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. They were built in collaboration with NGOs.
“These toilets do no have infestation of cockroaches and flies, do not require heavy and daily maintenance and do not need removal of solid waste,” a civic official said.
The bio-digester technology breaks down human excreta into usable water and gas through anaerobic process. As per the official, the charges for the toilets are as per the existing charges under the ‘Pay and Use’ police.
