Centre appoints four new governors; Najma Heptullah heads to Manipur

Najma Heptulla, who resigned as a Union minister last month, was appointed the governor of Manipur on Wednesday.

A Rashtrapati Bhavan communiqué said VP Singh Badnore, a former BJP MP from Rajasthan, was appointed the governor of election-bound Punjab, he replaces Kaptan Singh Solanki. Former Nagpur’s three times MP Banwarilal Purohit was appointed the Assam governor; he will replace Padmanabha Balakrishna Acharya. The BJP came to power in Assam for the first time in recent elections.

Heptullah had resigned from the Union ministry on July 12, 2016. She will take over from V Shamuganathan, the governor of Meghalaya, who was holding the additional charge of Manipur from September 30, 2015.

Prof Jagdish Mukhi, a BJP leader from Delhi, has been named the lieutenant governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Out of the three governors and one lieutenant-governor appointed by the President, assembly elections are due in two states, Punjab and Manipur.
