Cinemax employees went on a one day strike in Mumbai for protesting against the management’s decision to sack 14 employees and sending show-cause notices to seven employees. The multiplex had adopted new technology in which the customers have to place their phone on the Kiosk Machines for verifying their tickets after which they can then enter the cinema hall. Moreover, customers can obtain the hard copy of ticket from the kiosk machines thereby eliminating the need for ticket checkers.

Cinemax-AVSuryakant Mahadik head of Bharatiya Kamgar Sena said, “We appreciate the multiplex’s initiative to introduce new technologies. Prior to that they should impart training to employees for operating hand held devices for verifying the ticket. How do you expect a worker to use device which he is not accustomed to and send him a show cause notice?”

“We have had a meeting with the company’s management and discussed about the labour problems. We have asked the company to reinstate the sacked employees and withdraw the show cause notice sent to them,” he added.

“The companies should not neglect their workers after the introduction of a new technology as it a question of their livelihood. They should train us for adopting new technology,” said an employee of Cinemax on the condition of anonymity.

When tried to contact the management of Cinemax multiplex they remained unavailable for comment.
