In Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday 3 Indians among over 207 people were killed and more than 500 others injured after eight near simultaneous blasts hit three churches and three hotels frequented by tourists. Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe condemned blasts as “cowardly” and said the government was working to “contain the situation.” He called upon all Sri Lankans to remain united and strong during this tragic time.
The President of India Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Vice President Venkaiah Naidu condemned the serial blasts in Sri Lanka. Narendra Modi tweeted, “There is no place for such barbarism in our region. India stands in solidarity with the people of Sri Lanka. My thoughts are with the bereaved families and prayers with the injured.”
Police spokesman Ruwan Gunasekera said, “ The blasts occurred at around 8.45 a.m. (local time) as the Easter Sunday masses were in progress in churches. Three churches -St Anthony’s Church in Colombo, St Sebastian’s Church in the western coastal town of Negombo and another church in the eastern town of Batticaloa were targeted.” Eight suspects have been arrested in the connection of blasts so far.
Three explosions were reported from the five-star hotels, the Shangrila, the Cinnamon Grand and the Kingsbury. The Colombo National Hospital spokesperson, Dr Samindi Samarakoon, said more than 400 people have been admitted with injuries.
