A court has sentenced a 24-year-old man to three years rigorous imprisonment (RI) for attempting to murder a policeman.

Additional Sessions Judge A S Bhaisare recently awarded three years RI to Vikroli resident Itesham Iqbal Shaikh in the 2013 attempt to murder case.

He was also sentenced to one-year jail for the offence of assault or use of criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty. Both the sentences will run concurrently.

Additional Public Prosecutor Dileep Bahiram told the court that inspector M M Patil, then attached to Turbhe police station, was on night patrolling duty along with a squad on March 24, 2013 in Turbhe area. They then received a tip-off of the presence of a history-sheeter in the locality and subsequently laid siege to the area.

Spotting Shaikh, as the team rushed to nab him, he tried to escape and ran over his two-wheeler on inspector Patil and also assaulted him with a sickle on his head, injuring him severely, the prosecution said.

Police officer assisting the prosecution, Dhanraj Bhoye, told the court that the convict be awarded stringent punishment in the case as it involved a attack on a police official.

Judge Bhaisare, taking a serious view on the attack on a police officer on duty, sentenced Shaikh to three-year RI.
