India has secured release of Keralite abducted in Libya: Swaraj

Regi Joseph, an IT engineer who was abducted by gunmen in Libya in March has been freed, External Affairs minister Sushma Swaraj has confirmed.

Swaraj in a series of tweets confirmed the developments.

“Indian Embassy in Libya has secured the release of Regi Joseph – an Indian national from Kerala. He was abducted in March this year,” she tweeted.
She expressed gratitude to India’s Ambassdor in Libya, Azar A.H.Khan, for his efforts in securing the release.

“This has been possible with the efforts of Mr.Azar A.H.Khan our Ambassdor in Libya,” she said.

Swaraj assured that her government is doing everything in ensuring the smooth transaction of process.

“I am trying to tell you all that this is a very delicate matter. We are doing everything that we should do,” she said.

The 43-year-old was abducted from his workplace at Souk al Jumaa near Libya’s capital, Tripoli, on March 31.

Regi’s wife Shinuja, a nurse at the Tripoli-based TMC Hospital, had earlier sought the Indian embassy’s help in this matter. The couple have three daughters.

According to reports, on May he was produced in a court and he was able to meet his wife.
