The Indian Army struck along a giant arc on the Line of Control (LoC) early on Thursday morning, staging what it described as “surgical strikes” on seven terrorist launch-pads inside Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Surgical strikes were based on specific intelligence input of terror groups ready to infiltrate into India and carry out terror attacks.

The operation, which lasted from 12:30 am-4:30 am, took place 2 km-3 km across LoC.

The operation by the Indian Army has left Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif rattled. Pakistan has dismissed as “fabrication of truth” India’s claim that it has conducted a military operation across the LoC, terming it as a “quest” by India to create media hype by rebranding cross-border fire as a surgical strike.

In military textbooks, a “surgical strike” refers to an attack that causes damage to its intended target not to a mode of assault.

“Significant casualties have been caused in these strikes,” DGMO Lt General Ranbir Singh said adding, “the operation has now ended.”

“The strikes targeted the terrorists and those backing them,” the DGMO said.

“Despite our persistent appeals to Pakistan to not allow territory under its control to be used for terrorist activities, nothing was done,” the DGMO said.

Pakistan’s military said that two of its soldiers were killed when troops “exchanged fire across the Line of Control” in an engagement which began at 2:30 a.m. and ended at 8:00a.m. In a later statement, it denied any strikes had taken place across the Line of Control (LoC), claiming instead that there had been “cross-border fire initiated and conducted by India which is an ‘existential phenomenon’’.

There were no Indian casualties during the strikes.

“We do not have any plans to continue. However the Indian armed forces are fully prepared to deal with any contingency which may arise. I have spoken to Pakistani DGMO and expressed our concern. It is India’s intention to maintain peace and tranquillity in the region but we cannot certainly allow terrorists to operate across the Line of Control with impunity and attack our citizens,” said the DGMO.

India tried to solve the situation from the Uri attack at the diplomatic level but did not receive an adequate response, he said. Earlier on Thursday morning, Army officials briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the srcurity situation at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security. A meeting the Prime Minister due to thold on reviewing the MFN status to Pakistan was postponed to next week, the Prime Minister’s Office said.

In a statement on its website, the DG-ISPR of the Pakistani army said that there had been a major exchange of fire overnight, in which two Pakistani rangers were killed. “Pakistani troops befittingly responded to Indian unprovoked firing in Bhimber, Hotspring, Kel and Lipa sectors which started at 0230 and continued till 0800” the Pakistani military spokesperson claimed.
