A man was today sentenced to ten years of rigorous imprisonment by a local court for raping and robbing a 20-year-old girl at Vashi in Navi Mumbai in 2011.
Thane Additional Sessions Judge V V Virkar convicted Santosh Waghmare, a public toilet cleaner, for the crimes against the girl who worked as a maid servant in Vashi.
After the sexual assault which had taken place on April 13, 2011, the convict had also robbed the victim of her ornaments and cash.
Waghmare was awarded two separate sentences of ten years RI each for rape and robbery. Both the sentences will run concurrently. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on him on each count.
According to public prosecutor Ashok Khamkar, the victim had gone to her native place in Sangameshwar taluka of Ratnagiri district to meet her parents and was returning to her employer’s place in Vashi when the incident had taken place.
“When the girl got down from the bus in Vashi and started walking to her employer’s place around 3.30 am, the accused came from behind and forcibly took her to a secluded place nearby and raped her,” Khamkar said.
During the crime, Waghmare gagged her by putting a cotton ball into her mouth. Before escaping from the crime scene, he also took away the victim’s ornaments, Rs. 4,000 cash and a mobile phone.
The court examined around 15 witnesses and the evidence of the person to whom Waghmare had sold the victim’s mobile proved helpful for the prosecution, Khamkar said.
