Humiliated for refusing to fetch liquor, a 27-year-old man allegedly stabbed another man 26 times with a screwdriver in Dindoshi, Goregaon East, late on Friday night. The police said the man died of stab wounds and blunt injuries at a hospital in Jogeshwari, while the accused was held when he flagged down a patrolling police van minutes after the incident.

“Sandip Dhamanaskar (38), who worked at a firm in Bhandup, was seated in a BMC garden in Govind Nagar, Dindoshi, when the incident took place. Around 11.35 pm, he spotted Ranjit Chavan (27), who works with a decorator. Dhamanaskar, who was in an inebriated condition, asked Chavan to get him some more alcohol. But Chavan refused,” said Subhash Dafle, senior inspector, Dindoshi police station. Enraged at the refusal, Dhamanaskar allegedly hit Chavan on the head and abused him.

“Humiliated, Chavan rushed to his employer, Harish Shah (50), who operates Harish Decorators out of his home in Govind Nagar. When Chavan narrated the incident to him, Shah allegedly asked him to retaliate. Chavan, who was also drunk, grabbed a large screwdriver, went back to the garden and attacked Dhamanaskar,” Dafle said.

Chavan allegedly stabbed Dhamanaskar multiple times before fleeing, while other men in the garden rushed to alert the police. Dafle said Chavan ran to Goregaon-Mulund Link Road and spotted a police patrol car at a distance. “He stood in front of the car, forcing it to stop.

Chavan, who was covered in blood and held a screwdriver, told them that he had committed a murder. The policemen took Chavan to Goregaon police station,” he said.

Dhamanaskar was rushed to Hinduhridaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Trauma Care Hospital in Jogeshwari, and declared dead upon arrival. Dafle said there were 26 stab wounds on Dhamanaskar’s body.

Chavan, who was charged with murder, is now in the custody of Dindoshi police. The police have also booked his employer Shah.
