A massive fire broke out at a furniture market in Oshiwara area in Jogeshwari slum.

The fire broke out around 1 pm in one of the retail furniture shops in the market that deals in both old and new furniture, and rapidly spread to nearby shops.

At least 15 fire engines and 10 water tanks have been sent to the spot to bring the blaze under control. The officials are also trying to arrange for more fire engines to contain the fire.

Students of HMW English High School in Jogeshwari, which is located right next to the market, have been evacuated.

The reason for the fire, which the officials say falls into the category 4 (high-intensity), is not known yet.

Efforts were on to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to a huge slum pocket situated in the vicinity.

Locals say some cylinder explosions as a result of fire may have added to the intensity of the blaze. According to the officials also, two LPG cylinder explosions took place in the furniture market of Jogeshwari, which started the fire. Several huts in the surrounding area have been destroyed.

At least 25 people have sustained minor injuries in the incident, said a Maharashtra Emergency Medical Services official. Some have sustained minor cuts and a few received head injuries during evacuation.
