A 21-year-old chemistry graduate in Tamil Nadu’s Salem killed herself on Monday after her morphed pictures were posted on Facebook last week.

Her father, a weaver, filed a complaint with Magudanchavadi police station as soon as they got to know about the picture, on June 23.

Her father, Annadurai, a powerloom owner, refused to receive her body after post-mortem unless the culprit who posted the Facebook picture is nabbed.

“I will not receive the body of my daughter unless the culprit who was responsible for my daughter’s death is arrested,” he said.

In her suicide note, Vinupriya a BSc graduate mentioned that she took the drastic measure as she was unable to bear the stigma.

Unidentified persons had morphed her image a week ago and tagged her on Facebook. She came to know about the incident after her friends informed her about it. Her body has been sent to Salem general hospital. Sources said that despite the repeated pleas by the family, the police did not take any action.

“A suicide note was found in her room, in which she stated she could not deal with predicament, more so after her parents suspected she had something to do with the photos uploaded on Facebook,” said Sankari DSP Kandasamy.

During inquiry, the police assured Annadurai that they would nab the accused with the support of cyber crime sleuths. On Sunday night, another morphed semi-nude photo of Vinupriya was uploaded on Facebook. It was also sent to her father’s mobile phone. Unable to bear this torture, she committed suicide at noon on Monday, when she was home alone. When her parents returned home, they rushed her to Salem government super speciality hospital for treatment. But doctors at the hospital pronounced her as brought dead.

Her body was sent to the Salem General Hospital for post-mortem and results are awaited.

The father blamed police inaction despite several complaints and delay in investigations for his daughter’s death, while speaking to reporters.
