Former BJP leader Navjot Singh Sidhu on Friday formed a new political front in Punjab with India’s former hockey captain Pargat Singh and Punjab MLAs Simrat Singh Bains and Balwant Singh Bains. He has named the party “Aawaaz-e-Punjab”. The “Aawaaz-e-Punjab” poster says the front will “raise voice against those who have destroyed Punjab”.
The front will be launched by September 9, declared a big red poster shared on Facebook by the cricketer turned politician’s wife, Navjot Kaur Sidhu, who is a BJP MLA in the Punjab Assembly.
“Along with Pargat Singh and Bains brothers, we have formed a front,” said Mrs. Sidhu.
Earlier, there were reports that Navjot Singh Sidhu may join AAP.
Mr. Sidhu had walked out of the BJP in July and was in talks to join Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party for weeks. Those reportedly floundered over Mr. Sidhu’s demand that he be projected as the party’s candidate for chief minister.
The Congress had been trying to get Sidhu on board ever since he resigned from Rajya Sabha membership. Congress leader Amarinder Singh had earlier said that Sidhu was welcome to join Congress as it is in his DNA, as his father happened to be a Congressman.
Confirming about the new political party, Mr. Bains told that Navjot Singh Sidhu will be the presumptive chief minister of the new front. “We are in talks with all like-minded people to form a non-Akali, non-Congress and non-AAP political front,” Mr. Bains said.
He alleged that the Aam Aadmi Party, “which talked about giving an alternative to the people of Punjab has been exposed by its own people”.
