CM orders enquiry into irregularities in Mumbai Marathi Granth Sangrahalaya

devendra fadnavis 1The Mumbai Marathi Granth Sangrahalaya’s 120-year-old legacy is engulfed by irregularities in its operations and shrouded by the white scam. There is immense efforts put up to convert the Mumbai Marathi Granth Sangrahalaya which is registered under the Maharashtra Public Trust Act 1950 into an Organisation. The CM has now ordered a complete enquiry into the whole affairs of the Granth Sangrahalaya.

RTI Activist Anil Galgali and Dhananjay Shinde recently met CM Devendra Fadnavis and submitted a detailed memorandum demanding enquiry into the affairs of the Mumbai Marathi Granth Sangrahalaya. The CM, in response, directed the Higher and Technical education department to immediately enquire into the matter and take action. In the memorandum, it has been highlighted that, the Mumbai Marathi Granth Sangrahalaya has its own bye laws. The whole affairs of the Granth Sangrahalaya is run by utilising the loopholes in the by laws, which is creating complications in its operations. In fact, there exist three different by laws out of which the 1984 by laws is an Approved bye law. For the purpose of self convenience the trustees show bye laws pertaining to 1989 and sometimes 2013. The same has been challenged before the Charity Commissioner, who has been complacent in action. Though the amendment was challenged before the Charity Commissioner, who has chosen to ignore the lapses in the change report, illegal elections were conducted in 2016 and Chairman was elected directly, even though the Chairman had never filed his nomination for the post. This is a unique case in itself.  In the case of elections for the Vice Chairman post, no elections were conducted and on the direction of the Chairman, the Vice Chairman and Trustees were nominated in complete violation of the by laws. Except for Ramdas Phutane, all the great person’s nominated were not even ordinary members of the Granth Sangrahalaya. The applications for membership of these elite trustees were taken on February 22, 2017, and within next 15 minutes, they were declared as Vice Chairman and Trustees. Another interesting angle is that the same proposal was once again passed in the next meeting a month later on March 22, 2017. All the complaints on these illegal acts is pending before the Charity Commissioner.

Further, the memorandum also highlights that sale and creation of new branches of the Mumbai Marathi Granth Sangrahalaya was undertaken but the there is serious lapses in submission of the audit reports. It is no secret that the property prices in areas like Dadar have sky-rocketed and the tenants of the Sangrahalaya are deprived of facilities due to such illegal acts of the trustees. An enquiry into all these irregularities will expose trustees, executive officer and other members because the rule of taking prior permission of the charity commissioner in activities like sale have not been taken and all activities have been done without calling for tenders. Because of all these illegalities, the financial condition of the Mumbai Marathi Granth Sangrahalaya is in doldrums. It is open secret that looking at the towering buildings surrounding the Mumbai Marathi Granth Sangrahalaya, and with dreams of redevelopment, new members of various political parties and professional architects have been nominated as trustees.

“CM Devendra Fadnavis has given orders for enquiry on the memorandum. After a detailed enquiry all the financial irregularities and the white collar scam will be exposed and a true picture will emerge,” expressed Anil Galgali.

Jitters to relief: Mumbaikars react to PM’s address to nation

modi address nationPrime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement about an address to the nation, coupled with the delay in its commencement, heightened speculation among Mumbai commuters about the contents of the speech.

Having witnessed demonetisation announced in a similar way in 2016, the restlessness among commuters and office-goers in the financial capital’s lifeline was palpable, as talk veered to what to expect from the latest missive from the PM.

Access to information through social media sort of democratised guess work, with various theories being floated.

As the wait continued — Modi was to speak at 11.45 am initially — the speculation only intensified with a wide range of possibilities being discussed.

The discerning ones noticed a sharp correction in the equity markets ten minutes after Modi tweeted about his impending message to the nation, leading to further concerns on what to expect.

Tweets were being read out aloud in offices and local trains as people tried to get their hands on any information.

Info in social media about the Cabinet Committee on Security having met on Wednesday morning upped expectations of the PM’s announcement being security-related.

“The visit to the ATM can be deferred,” quipped a commuter in a Churchgate-bound train, in an obvious reference to demonetisation, as humour took centrestage in the absence of any credible lead.

The impact of the PM’s speech on the approaching Lok Sabha elections was the topic of an animated discussion in an office at Hutatma Chowk in south Mumbai.

Former Jammu and Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah’s tweet on the Lok Sabha election ‘results’ being announced (by the PM) seemed a particular favourite.

However, it was back to business as usual after Modi announced India’s successful demonstration of anti-satellite missile capability.

PM Modi has made country proud with Mission Shakti: CM Fadnavis

devendra fadnavisMaharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had done India proud with the successful testing of an anti-satellite missile.

Fadnavis also congratulated the scientists who achieved the feat and noted that India has become the fourth country in the world after the US, Russia, and China to have such a capability.

“Congratulations India! We are now a space power too! And thank you Hon PM Narendra Modi ji for making India proud again by accomplishing #MissionShakti by testing anti-satellite (ASAT) missile & shooting down live satellite in just 3 minutes,” Fadnavis tweeted.

“India also congratulates all hard working scientists and entire team for this great achievement and making entire Nation proud,” Fadnavis said in another tweet.

Modi announced earlier on Wednesday that India had demonstrated anti-satellite missile capability by shooting down a live satellite.

Mission Shakti, led by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), was aimed at strengthening India’s overall security, he said, adding that the test was not directed at any particular country.

Limitless drama to reap political benefits: Mamata Banerjee on Mission Shakti

mamtaTrinamool Congress Chief Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his announcement about India’s successful demonstration of anti-satellite missile capability, saying it was “yet another limitless drama” to “reap political benefits” ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.

Terming it a gross violation of the model code of conduct, Banerjee said there was “no great urgency” of announcing the mission by a government “past its expiry date” and asserted that it seems to be the “desperate oxygen to save the imminent sinking of the BJP boat”.

She said she will lodge a complaint with the Election Commission.

“India’s Mission Programme is world-class for many many years. We are always proud of our scientists, @DRDO_India, other research & space organisations,” she said adding research, space management and development are a continuous process over the years and “Modi, as usual likes to take the credit for everything”.

She said “credit to those who really deserve it, our scientists & researchers.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday announced that India had demonstrated anti-satellite missile capability by shooting down a live satellite, describing it as a rare achievement that puts the country in an exclusive club of space super powers.

“Today’s announcement is yet another limitless drama and publicity mongering by Modi desperately trying to reap political benefits at the time of election. This is a gross violation of Model Code of Conduct.

“There is no great urgency in conducting and announcing the mission now by a government past its expiry date. It seems a desperate oxygen to save the imminent sinking of the BJP boat. We are lodging a complaint with the Election Commission,” the West Bengal chief minister said in a series of tweets.

Senior TMC leader and West Bengal minister Firhad Hakim said that Narendra Modi should stop taking credit for the achievement or job done by others.

“Shooting down a satellite is the credit of our scientists. The Modi government in the last five years has failed to provide any relief to the people of the country,” senior the TMC leader.

“So ahead of the elections, the BJP and Modi should stop these tricks to fool the masses. It won’t have any impact on the poll prospects of the BJP in the upcoming elections,” Hakim said.

Meanwhile, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal congratulated the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and the entire scientific community for achieving yet another milestone by successfully testing ASAT technology.

“Congratulations once again to DRDO & entire scientific community in achieving yet another milestone by successfully testing ASAT technology,” he tweeted.

SC sentences lawyer to 3 months jail for contempt, suspends term after apology

Supreme CourtThe Supreme Court on Wednesday sentenced lawyer Mathews J Nedumpara to three months in jail for contempt of court and attempting to browbeat judges in a matter related to designation of senior advocates.

A bench of Justices R F Nariman and Vineet Saran suspended the sentence taking note of the unconditional apology tendered by him as also his undertaking that he will never attempt to browbeat any judge either in the Supreme Court or the Bombay High Court.

The bench however barred Nedumpara from practising as an advocate in the apex court for one year.

The bench, meanwhile, issued a fresh contempt notice to Nedumpara and three others for scandalous allegations against both the judges of the bench.

It said that serious allegations have been levelled against both the members of the bench in a letter which was received by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and other judges of the apex court.

It requested the CJI to constitute an appropriate bench to hear the fresh contempt issue saying scandalous allegations have been levelled against both the members of the present bench.

EC notice to BJP poll panel member for sharing ‘Main Bhi Chowkidar Hun’ video

ECI 1The Election Commission on Wednesday issued a show cause notice to a member of the BJP’s National Election Committee for sharing an audio-visual advertisement titled “Main Bhi Chowkidar Hun” on social media without complying with the directions of the poll body, an official said.

He said Neeraj has been directed to submit a reply within three days.

The poll body’s Media Certification and Monitoring Committee (MCMC) had issued a certificate dated March 16 to Neeraj “in respect of the said advertisement subject to the exclusion of the clips depicting Army personnel”, Delhi’s chief electoral office said.

On March 16, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched the ‘Main Bhi Chowkidar Hun’ campaign by putting out a tweet, “Your Chowkidar is standing firm & serving the nation. But, I am not alone. Everyone who is fighting corruption, dirt, social evils is a Chowkidar. Everyone working hard for the progress of India is a Chowkidar.”

He had also tweeted a video that began with the PM addressing the people saying, “Your chowkidar is absolutely alert”.

The video then features a song with visuals of people from across the length and breadth of the country singing ‘Main Bhi Chowkidar Hun’.

The clip also shows a group of men in Army fatigues engaged in a mock operation.

Earlier this month, the EC had directed political parties to keep the country’s defence personnel out of election campaigning and not to use their photographs in advertisements.

In a bid to check violation of the poll code on social media, the poll panel has asked political parties and candidates to get their digital content certified by the MCMC before posting the same.

“In the journey of every nation there are moments that bring utmost pride and have a historic impact on generations to come. One such moment is today,” he said in an unprecedented broadcast to the nation on television, radio and social media.

His address came as campaigning intensifies ahead of Lok Sabha elections starting April 11.

He said the action was not directed against any country and the satellite was a pre-determined target orbiting at an altitude of 300 km.

mallyaThe sale of shares, held by absconding businessman Vijay Mallya in United Breweries Holdings (UBHL) Limited, by the Debt Recovery Tribunal has fetched Rs 1,008 crore, the ED said Wednesday.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) said the shares, attached by the agency as part of its money laundering probe against the liquor baron, were lying with Yes Bank and the Karnataka High Court had recently ordered the bank to surrender these in favour of the Debt Recovery Tribunal (DRT) in Bangalore.

Subsequently, the ED said, the recovery officer of the DRT had published a notice early this month for the sale of 74,04,932 shares of UBHL.

“Based on the submissions made and proactive steps taken by the ED and in view of the large outstanding debts of the SBI consortium against Kingfisher Airlines and Vijay Mallya, a special PMLA court allowed sale of shares on March 26 (Tuesday).

“Subsequently, shares were sold by the recovery officer on Wednesday and an amount of Rs 1,008 crore has been realised,” the agency said.

These shares of UBL (united breweries limited) were held by UBHL and were kept with the bank as security in lieu of a loan taken by Kingfisher Airlines, it said.

Mallya is at present based in London and extradition proceedings are on to bring him to India as the ED and the CBI are probing parallel criminal cases against him for an alleged bank loan default of Rs 9,000 crore.
