Dev Patel gets flak for taking up Indian roles

dev patelBritish-Indian actor Dev Patel has revealed he is tired of being criticised for “stealing” roles from “real” Indian actors.

The 28-year-old actor, who was born in London to parents from Gujarat, India, said he is trying to understand himself better by connecting to his heritage.

“I get flak sometimes because people will say, ‘Why aren’t they giving these roles to a real Indian?’ I wonder, What does that even mean? The only way I can converse with my grandparents is in Gujarati. Does that make me real enough? Or am I only allowed to witness the moments of prejudice and racism going through airports? Is that the only bit that I’m allowed of the culture?

“The truth is I’m trying to understand myself better and my heritage, to figure things out, in the movie choices I make. That’s been the greatest thing for me in going to India repeatedly,” Patel told San Francisco Chronicle.

The “Lion” star previously confessed he “reconnected” with his Indian roots when he starred in the Oscar-winning “Slumdog Millionaire”. In 2016, he later said that he could never really fit in as the locals “could smell the foreigner on me”.

F-16s escort Mumbai-Singapore flight after bomb threat

singapore airlinesA Singapore Airlines flight from Mumbai to Singapore with 263 passengers on board on Tuesday received a bomb threat, prompting Singapore Air Force to send two F-16s to escort the aircraft.

The flight landed safely at Singapore’s Changi International Airport on Tuesday around 8 am (local time), the airline added.

“Singapore Airlines confirms there was a bomb threat concerning SQ423 operating from Mumbai to Singapore. The aircraft arrived in Singapore on March 26, 2019, at about 08:00 hrs (local time).

“There were 263 passengers on board. We are assisting the authorities with their investigations and regret that we are unable to provide further details,” a statement issued by the airline said.

The Republic of Singapore Air Force said two F16C/Ds escorted the SIA aeroplane.

The RSAF said in a Facebook post that two F-16C/Ds were scrambled to intercept the SIA flight.

“Our fighters escorted the airliner till it landed safely at Changi Airport,” it said.

All passengers, except for a woman and a child, disembarked safely and had to undergo screening.

The woman and the child were held back for questioning by the police, who are investigating the incident.

Preliminary checks showed that the airline received a call after the plane left Mumbai’s airport on Monday at about 11.35 pm local time. The caller claimed that there was a bomb on the plane.

The plane, a Boeing 777-300ER, had departed Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport at 11.36pm local time on Monday, according to website FlightAware.

It arrived in Singapore 31 minutes behind schedule, the site added.

LS polls: Tawde ridicules Congress over defections

vinod tawde 1Maharashtra BJP leader and Education Minister Vinod Tawde Tuesday took potshots at the Congress in view of rumblings in the Opposition party in the run-up to the Lok Sabha elections.

Tawde’s dig came against the backdrop of sudden ouster of Mumbai unit Congress president Sanjay Nirupam on Monday and recent exit of some party leaders in rest of the state in favour of the ruling BJP.

“The Mumbai president of Congress had to give up his position to secure a ticket for Lok Sabha elections. On the other hand, (Maharashtra Congress president) Ashok Chavan was trying to field his wife for Lok Sabha, but the party forced him to contest,” Tawde said, a day after Congress president Rahul Gandhi replaced Nirupam with former MP Milind Deora.

Nirupam has been given the ticket to contest from Mumbai North West Lok Sabha constituency.

Taking a dig at Congress, Tawde said, “these developments show the sacrifice being made by leaders for their party. It will be better if Congress starts finalising nominees for 2024 elections henceforth, so that the party would have enough numbers to contest unlike now”.

He said the common man understood the current situation in the Congress very well.

Tawde also criticised Congress chief Rahul Gandhi’s minimum income plan promise for the poor.

“Rahul is trying to do what his grandmother (Indira Gandhi) failed to achieve. Congress is ridiculing the poor. What did they do when they were in power?” he questionned.

The Congress’ campaign in Maharashtra seems to be in disarray due to defection of some leaders to the BJP.

Some of them are Sujay Vikhe Patil, son of senior Congress leader Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, former Union minister from Sangli Prateek Patil, and Satara district Congress president Ranjitsinh Naik Nimbalkar.

The BJP has fielded Sujay and Naik Nimbalkar from Ahmednagar and Madha seats, respectively.

HC raps ECI for failure to pass order on social media poll ads

hcThe Bombay High Court on Tuesday rapped the Election Commission of India (ECI) for its failure to come up with any orders regulating political advertisements on social media 48 hours before polling day.

A bench of Chief Justice Naresh Patil and Justice N M Jamdar asked the ECI why it was hesitant to pass regulatory or prohibitory orders on such ads.

“Why have so many adjournments been taken for something which is an important issue? Why are you (ECI) apprehensive to pass an order?” the bench asked.

While ECI counsel Pradeep Rajagopal denied there was any apprehension on its part, the court said the ECI’s conduct through the hearings made it apparent that it was “hesitant” to bring about such regulation.

The bench reserved its orders on the matter and said it will pass appropriate orders.

The bench is hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by lawyer Sagar Suryavanshi seeking directions to the ECI to regulate fake news in the form of paid political ads on social media.

The PIL also sought that just as campaigning and political ads, hoardings etc are prohibited on the ground 48 hours before polling day, a similar “black out” be enforced for social media platforms.

In compliance with the high court’s previous orders, the ECI submitted an affidavit on Monday, informing the court of the proposed pre-verification rules for political ads.

It also submitted that it had conducted a meeting with various social media intermediaries in New Delhi earlier this month, where the intermediaries had agreed to adopt a ‘voluntary code of ethics’ ensuring advertisements were displayed on their respective platforms only after they were verified by the ECI.

However, the court noted that the issue of the 48-hour blackout was not discussed in the meeting.

It said the ECI could not pass off its responsibility to social media intermediaries and expect them to impose voluntary regulations for the elections.

During a previous hearing, social networking site Facebook had told the court that it had introduced a strict “verification processes” for all political ads and paid content of “national interest” on its website in India ahead of the 2019 general elections.

The new system ensures that only bona fide individuals, who are citizens of India, and political organisations based in the country can place political ads, Facebook had said.

Twitter and YouTube had told the bench that they already permit only such political ads that had been verified by the Election Commission.

They had, however, submitted that they could not impose a 48-hour blackout unless the ECI or any other central government authority issued specific directions to the effect.
