”I think it will be strong. But you don’t want to mess it up on the very last outing. I haven’t watched a single series that has a following like Thrones does where everyone is satisfied with the ending.

Congress will eradicate poverty in country after coming to power: Rahul Gandhi

rahul gandhi 4Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday promised a “surgical strike” on poverty and said his party had been working on how to eradicate it for the last six months. Addressing a rally in Suratgarh a day after declaring his party would roll out a minimum income guarantee scheme for the poorest 20 per cent households if voted to power, Gandhi said only the rich could dream under the Narendra Modi rule.

“We will eradicate poverty in the country. This is a ‘dhamaka’. No country has done this in history. There should not be a single poor person in the country,” Gandhi said. He said his party would work to reduce unemployment if it comes to power.

“If Modi gives money to the rich, the Congress will give money to the poor,” Gandhi said. Alleging that Modi had helped those who had black money, the Congress president said those lifted from poverty by the UPA government had again been made poor in the last five years.

According to him, 14 crore people were lifted from poverty by the UPA government. “It is a shame that there are still 25 crore poor people in the country,” Gandhi said. “You will get the right price for your labour and product,” he told the gathering.

The UPA government had launched schemes over 10 years but Modi ended them all, the Congress chief said, adding that the prime minister had failed to understand the MGNREGA job scheme. Taking a jibe at Modi, he said the Prime Minister was indeed a “chowkidar” but of industrialist Anil Ambani.

Grasim challenges Rs 5,872 cr demand from I-T authorities

aditya birlaGrasim Industries has challenged the Rs 5,872.13 crore demand from Income Tax Department with respect to its merger with two Aditya Birla group firms.

“The Bombay High Court, while granting time to the department for filing the reply, has granted a stay against the recovery of demand,” the company said in regulatory filings to stock exchanges.

Grasim contended before the court that order was “wholly unsustainable in law.”

In September 2017, the National Company Law Tribunal bench at Ahmedabad had approved the merger of Aditya Birla Nuvo with Grasim Industries to be followed by the listing of Aditya Birla Financial Services.

On March 14 this year, the company received a communication issued by the Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax, raising a demand of Rs 5,872.13 crore on account of dividend distribution tax (including interest).

The department held that as the demerger of the demerged undertaking is not in compliance with Section 2(19 AA) of the Act, the value of shares allotted by Aditya Birla Capital Ltd to the shareholders Grasim Industries, in consideration of the transfer and vesting of the demerged undertaking into Aditya Birla Capital, amounted to dividend within the meaning of the Act.

The company said that Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax had issued a show cause notice on February 11, which was subsequently revised on March 1, as to why the provisions of section 115-0 read with section 115-Q of the Income Tax Act, 1961 should not be applied on the allotment of equity shares by Aditya Birla Capital to the shareholders Grasim Industries, pursuant to the mega merger between the three entities.

The company said it had filed its detailed submissions in response to these notices.

Sensex zooms 425 pts on global rebound; Nifty above 11,450

BSEBenchmark Sensex rebounded about 425 points to end well above the 38,000-mark Tuesday, breaking its two-day falling streak on gains in heavy-weights RIL, SBI and ICICI Bank amid persistent foreign fund inflows and positive global leads.

The broader NSE Nifty too inched closer to the key 11,500 mark.

A stronger rupee also supported the rally. The rupee strengthened 19 paise to 68.77 against the dollar (intra-day).

Markets commenced on a strong note largely in line with a firming trend at other Asian bourses but remained range-bound as investors were cautious. Buying activity gathered momentum in late afternoon trade that helped both the indices Sensex and Nifty to regain their key levels.

The 30-share Sensex stayed in the green for the better part of the session and hit the day’s high of 38,297.70 as buying pace gathered momentum towards the fag-end.

It finally ended at 38,233.41, up 424.50 points, or 1.12 per cent.

TRAI to hold consultation with BSNL, MTNL on allocation 4G spectrum: RS Sharma

traiTelecom regulator TRAI will hold consultation on spectrum allocation with state-owned firms BSNL and MTNL soon, a top official said on Tuesday.

“We have received reference from the DoT couple of days back on allocation of spectrum for 4G services to BSNL and MTNL. We will issue a consultation paper and hold open house discussion on it,” TRAI Chairman R S Sharma told reporters on sidelines of an ICEA event.

Both the telecom firms have asked the government to allot them spectrum for 4G services in lieu of equity. BSNL, which has the lowest debt of Rs 14,000 crore among all telecom operators, has sought 4G spectrum across India through equity infusion of Rs 7,000 crore to help it compete in the market.

The Digital Communication Commission, apex decision making body at the Department of Telecom, has sought view of TRAI on demand of spectrum from both the PSUs.
