PRP’s Kawade criticises Ambedkar for mentioning candidates’ castes

prakash ambedkarPeople’s Republican Party chief Jogendra Kawade on Monday criticised Dalit leader Prakash Ambedkar for mentioning castes of the Lok Sabha poll candidates of his Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA).

Kawade said this was like betraying B. R. Ambedkar, the architect of the Constitution, who always fought against the caste system.

Prakash Ambedkar, the grandson of B. R. Ambedkar, last Friday released a list of 37 Lok Sabha candidates who will contest the upcoming polls under the banner of VBA.

The VBA, a social coalition of Dalits and Muslims jointly formed by Prakash Ambedkar and Asaduddin Owaisi-led All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM), mentioned the castes of all the candidates who figure in the list.

“Prakash Ambedkar earlier demanded removal of the column to mention castes in school certificates, but he has now advertised the castes of all candidates of VBA and betrayed his grandfather,” Kawade told media in Maharashtra’s Ahmednagar district.

He said that his party, a splinter faction of the Republican Party of India, was awaiting response from the opposition Congress and NCP over his demand to contest four Lok Sabha seats – Shirdi, Amravati, Ramtek and Ichalkaranji- in the state.

Lok Sabha polls to 48 seats in Maharashtra will be held in four phases on April 11, 18, 23 and 29.

2, including woman assistant, held for editor’s killing

2019 1largeimg23 Wednesday 2019 110422584Two persons, including a 24-year-old woman, have been arrested for allegedly killing the editor of a news magazine in Maharashtra’s Thane district and then disposing of his body, police said on Monday.

India Unbound editor Nityanand Pandey’s body, with injuries to the head, was found on Sunday near a creek in Khardi village in Kharbao in Bhiwandi.

Pandey (45) had gone missing on March 15 and his kin had filed a missing person complaint with Kashimira police station.

Addressing a press conference on Monday, Thane Superintendent of Police Shivaji Rathod said the killing was the result of alleged sexual harassment faced by the arrested woman at the hands of Pandey over the last two years.

“Ankira was working with Pandey for three years and she has said that she was facing sexual harassment at his hands for two years. She then conspired with Uma Shankar to eliminate him,” he said.

“On March 15, the two accused took Pandey on the pretext of showing him a row house in Uttan. They spiked his protein drink which rendered Pandey unconscious. They then strangled him and threw his body in a creek near Khardi village,” he said.

Move to appoint Lokpal comes after pressure on govt, says Anna Hazare

annaAfter the Lokpal selection panel reportedly cleared the name of a retired Supreme Court Judge for the ombudsman’s post, anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare has said that the government was “forced” to take the step under pressure of the people’s movement and the apex court.

According to reports, Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose’s name was cleared at a meeting of the selection committee comprising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi and senior advocate Mukul Rohtagi on Friday.

“The movement by the public for the Lokpal forced the government to appoint the Lokpal. Moreover, the Supreme Court used its baton not once or twice but thrice and that forced the government to appoint the Lokpal,” Anna Hazare told reporters on Sunday.

“The Lokpal is being appointed 9 years after the movement. The world is now seeing how powerful the public is. The Supreme Court is also very powerful,” Hazare said.

The apex court had earlier asked the government about the steps being taken to appoint the Lokpal to deal with complaints of corruption in high places, the activist added.

On February 5, Hazare ended his hunger strike after seven days following assurances from the government on the Lokpal and Lokayukta issues. Hazare was on a hunger strike from January 30 demanding the setting up of the Lokpal at the Centre and Lokayuktas in the states to address the issues related to corruption.

Bombay HC stays Wadia defamation plea hearing against Ratan Tata, others

BHC

The Bombay High Court on Monday stayed till March 27 the proceedings before a magistrate court in a 2016 criminal defamation case filed by Nusli Wadia against Ratan Tata and some other directors of Tata Sons.

A single bench of Justice Mridula Bhatkar stayed the proceedings through an interim order.

Justice Bhatkar will now hear a petition filed by Tata and other directors of Tata Sons seeking quashing of the defamation case against them on March 27.

Therefore, Justice Bhatkar directed the magistrate’s court to refrain from proceeding with the hearing on the defamation case until then.

In December 2018, the magistrate court had issued notices to Ratan Tata and other directors of Tata Sons in the criminal defamation case filed by Wadia and then posted the matter for further hearing on March 25, 2019.

Wadia had filed the case in 2016 after he was voted out of the boards of some Tata Group companies.

Wadia had claimed that Tata and the others had made defamatory statements against him after they removed Cyrus Mistry on October 24, 2016 as the group chairman of Tata Sons.

Wadia was on the boards as an independent director of group companies like Indian Hotels Company that runs the Taj group of hotels, TCS, Tata Motors and Tata Steel among others.

He was voted out by shareholders at a specially convened general meeting between December 2016 and February 2017.

He said that he approached the magistrate’s court as he was not satisfied with the explanation the respondents (Tata and others) had given him following his letters to them.

He therefore initiated defamation proceedings against the respondents under section 500 of the Indian Penal Code.

Wadia is represented in the high court by advocate Abad Ponda.

New ‘Suicide Squad’ film is ‘total reboot’: producer Peter Safran

suicide squad

Producer Peter Safran has revealed that the upcoming “Suicide Squad” movie will be a “total reboot”.

Safran said the James Gunn-directed film has a lot to offer in comparison to the 2016 film, reported Contactmusic.

“First of all, we don’t call it ‘Suicide Squad 2’ because it’s a total reboot, so it’s ‘The Suicide Squad’ and I think people should be extremely excited about it.

“It’s everything you would hope from a James Gunn script and I think that says a lot and that promises a lot and I know that we will deliver a lot,” Safran said.

The original ‘Suicide Squad’ movie, which had a star-studded cast that included the likes of Margot Robbie, Will Smith and Cara Delevingne, performed well at the box office, but was widely panned by the critics.
