Leopard spotted moving near bungalow in Nashik

leopardA leopard was spotted moving near a bungalow in Nashik city of Maharashtra on Sunday morning, triggering panic among locals, police said.

The big cat was captured in a CCTV installed at the bungalow located in the crowded Savarkar Nagar locality, following which its residents informed the police who in-turn alerted the forest department, an official at Gangapur police station said.

The forest and police officials rushed to the site and launched a search, he said, adding that the feline was yet to be traced.

On January 25, a leopard had strayed in the same area and injured a local politician and two media personnel, police earlier said.

The carnivore was later caught by forest officials.

The western part of Nashik district has dense forests which are home to several wild animals including leopards, wolves, hyenas, and foxes, a forest official said.

Maharashtra CM supports mass weddings

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday underlined the need of organising mass marriages, saying such events go a long way in reducing financial burden incurred on individual weddings.

He was speaking at a function in Asangaon town in Sahapur taluka where as many as 1,101 tribal couples tied the knot.

Many more such mass marriage ceremonies, which are low cost, should be organised, the chief minister said, adding they go a long way in reducing the financial burden of individual weddings.

Praising the tribal community, he said its members have preserved ‘jal-jamin-jangal’ (water, land, forest) in the real sense and also protected the country’s culture.

Five couples who were part of the mass marriage were given ‘mangalsutra’ (sacred necklace worn by married women) and essential household items, including gas connections, under the Centre’s Ujjwala scheme.

Dwelling on local issues, the Chief Minister said all formalities have been completed for the supply of water to Sahapur from the Bhavali dam.

The supply will begin once approval is received from the Maharashtra Water Resources Regulatory Authority, he said.

Fadnavis assured to look into all pending issues related to Sahapur.

Focus on Mandhana as Board President’s XI take on England eves in warm-up game

smriti mandhanaThe focus would be trained on in-form opener Smriti Mandhana when she leads the Board President’s XI in a warm-up match against the visiting England women’s team here on Monday.

The match is being played at the Wankhede Stadium and Mandhana, who is being helped by team coach W V Raman to build up her patience, would be keen to put the lessons learnt into practice before plunging into the series opener next Friday.

Mandhana recently scored 196 runs in the three-match ODI series against hosts New Zealand, including a 100 and 90.

She would be keen to carry that form into the upcoming home series and a good knock in the warm-up match will only boost her confidence.

Apart from Mandhana, BPXI wicket-keeper R Kalpana is also in the ODI squad and she could also benefit from playing in the practice game.

On the other hand, England women are a force to reckon with in the 50-over format and they utilise this game to get acclimatised to the pitch, weather and local conditions.

The England eves also boast of some big names in Tammy Beumont, Heather Knight and Danny White, who had smashed the Indian bowlers during the T20 series last year.

The trio and others would be hoping to start the campaign on a positive note.

The following three-match ODI series, forming part of the ICC Championship, will be played at the same venue on the 22nd, 25th, and 28th of this month.

LS polls: Mumbai Cong promises jobs, unemployment allowance

mumbai

The Mumbai Congress is set to roll out a campaign aimed at providing employment to youth in the megacity and a monthly allowance to unemployed people if the party is voted to power in the Lok Sabha polls.

The campaign, titled ‘Chalo Ward Abhiyaan’, taken up in view of the “rising unemployment in the country”, will commence from Monday, Mumbai Congress chief Sanjay Nirupam said in a statement.

The city Congress unit has already started working on the plan and printed around six lakh forms, he said.

The Youth Congress workers will be visiting every house in all the Assembly segments in Mumbai to ensure that every youngster fills these forms, Nirupam said.

“Those who fill the forms will be given allowance cards. If we are voted to power, the allowance cardholders will be given preference in employment, or else they will provide unemployment allowance,” he said.

Nirupam said that people between 18 and 40 years of age would be eligible for the unemployment allowance.

The new Congress-led governments in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh have already announced unemployment allowances of Rs 3,500 and Rs 4,000 per month respectively, he noted.

Nirupam also said that unlike the ruling BJP, the Congress will “actually walk the talk”, if it is voted to power in the Lok Sabha elections.

Sand artist pays tribute to Pulwama terror attack victims

pulwama martyrAmid the outpouring of grief and outrage, a woman sand artist in Mumbai paid tributes to the 40 CRPF jawans killed in Pulwama terror attack in her own novel way.

Laxmi Gaud made a sand mural at the Juhu beach here on Saturday depicting a hand, decorated in three colours of the national flag, saluting those killed in the deadly terror strike.

Gaud, who assists her husband at his ‘vada pav’ (a popular street snack) stall on the beach when not doing sand art, took over nine hours to complete the sculpture.

The artist later told reporters on Saturday evening that she used nearly one tonne of the beach sand to make the mural.

“I started making it at 8.30 am and completed it by 6 pm. Some savings from our family business and financial support from friends helped me in buying colours for the sculpture,” Gaud said.

“This is a tribute to the jawans from me and my family,” she added.

At least 40 CRPF personnel were killed and five injured on Thursday in one of the deadliest terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir when a Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) suicide bomber rammed a vehicle carrying over 100 kg of explosives into their bus in Pulwama district.

Following the Pulwama terror attack in which 40 CRPF jawans were killed, the film wing of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) Saturday asked music label companies to stop working with Pakistani singers.

“We have verbally communicated to Indian music companies like T-Series, Sony Music, Venus, Tips Music etc to not work with Pakistani singers. These companies should stop it immediately or we will take action in our own style,” Amey Khopkar, head of the MNS Chitrapat Sena told agencies.

Recently, Bhushan Kumar’s T-Series had collaborated with Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Atif Aslam for two different singles.

“They have removed their songs (from the company’s YouTube channel) post our warning,” Khopkar claimed.

In 2016, after the Uri attacks, the Raj Thackeray-led party had similarly set a 48-hour deadline for all Pakistani artists working in India to leave the country.

‘Roma’ star Yalitza Aparicio responds to racist attack on her

Roma“Roma” star Yalitza Aparicio has said that she is proud of her roots, a day after a fellow countryman used a racial slur to describe her.

Actor Sergio Goyri, best known for starring in various soap operas in Mexcio, had criticised the Academy for Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) for nominating “a f***ing Indian who says, ‘Yes, ma’am, no, ma’am'”, in an apparent reference to Aparicio.

According to IndieWire, Aparicio, 25, released a brief statement in response to Goyri’s criticism.

“I am proud to be an Oaxacan indigenous woman and it saddens me that there are people who do not know the correct meaning of words,” the actor said.

Goyri has since apologized for his remarks, saying that it was not his intention to hurt anyone.

“It was never my intent to offend anyone. I apologize to Yalitza, who deserves (this Oscar nomination) and much more. For me, it is an honour to see a Mexican be nominated for an Oscar,” the actor said in a video posted on Instagram.

At the upcoming Academy Awards, Aparicio is nominated in the best actress category for her performance in the Alfonso Cuaron-directed Spanish language feature. The film in total has received 10 nominations, including Best Film and Best Director for Cuaron.

India captain Virat Kohli remained on top while teammate Chesteshwar Pujara managed to hold on to his third position in the latest ICC Test rankings, where Sri Lankan Kusal Perera made a quantum leap of 58 places.

Kohli is leading the chart with 992 rating points ahead of New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson (897 points) and Pujara (881). Besides Kohli and Pujara, no other Indian feature in the top 10 list.

The left-handed Perera has reached a career-best 40th position after 15 Tests, scoring 51 and an unbeaten 153 that guided his team to an improbable win, partnering in the highest ever unbroken 10th wicket stand in a winning cause in first-class cricket.

He added 78 runs for the last wicket with Vishwa Fernando (six not out) to beat an 83-year record set by the Australians against Madras in February 1936.

In the bowlers’ list, Australia fast bowler Pat Cummins has overtaken Kagiso Rabada to grab the top spot.

Cummins is the first from his country since Glenn McGrath’s pole position in the list, back in February 2006.

Cummins is leading the bowlers table ahead of England’s James Anderson and Rabada of South Africa.

Among the bowlers list, India’s Ravindra Jadeja is placed at the fifth spot with 794 points. Jadeja also features in the all-rounders’ list at the third position ahead of West Indies’ Jason Holder and Shakib-Al Hasan.
