“How’s the Josh?”, asks Mamata

leadAs political Mahabharata continues in Kolkata, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee seems to be back in her role as Mahishasurmardini or more properly as “Mahishasurmardini of the streets”. Mamata Banerjee, who was on a ‘dharna’ over the CBI’s forceful attempt to question the Kolkata Police Commissioner in connection with chit fund scams, was adamant that she will continue her “satyagraha” until the country and its Constitution are “saved”. However, Banerjee on Tuesday evening called off her sit-in protest.

Acc. to Hindu mythology, Mahishasurmardini was a goddess born out of all the deities to kill the asuras. However, this Bengali leader is known for her street fighting acumen. The latest turmoil in the nation, which got an upsurge from Delhi and reached to West Bengal, triggered flutters in political circles and has smittened the entire nation.

TMC Lok Sabha MP Idris Ali asserted, “Whatever decision our Chief Minister Mamata has taken is right and for the safety of the country as a whole and the SC verdict indicates the same. BJP has misused the independent institutions like CBI; the entire nation and the world have gone against BJP for its strategies. Mamata’s dharma is not to save the Kolkata Police Chief, but to save the democracy.”

Few months back, rounds of rumours were going on that Mamata Banerjee has reached an understanding with the central leadership of the party (BJP) and the entire government machinery including the CBI, Enforcement Directorate (ED), and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) are slowing down with their investigations into cases of corruption and financial impropriety against some of the Trinamool leaders. Many senior Trinamool leaders were accused of chit fund scams. Trinamool MPs Sudip Bandopadhyay and Tapas Paul, along with others, were arrested and were imprisoned (they are out on bail now) in the Rose Valley scam. Madan Mitra (the former transport minister) and MP Kunal Ghosh were also arrested for their involvement in the Saradha scam. Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee and her brothers too have been accused of amassing huge assets. The scams defamed Mamata and it was assumed that it will affect functionaries of her party.

Congress Spokesperson Shaktisinh Gohil told AV, “If anyone speaks a word against Modi, the action is taken misusing the power. It’s very unfortunate that issues like CBI vs Kolkata Police are taking place. Our Constitution has defined the power of the Centre and the States in a very clear way. The law and order is a subject under the state government and if CBI wanted to interrogate Police Chief, they could’ve followed the system. Congress stands with justice, democracy, Constitution; not only Mamata, we too are fighting to save the country’s democracy.”

While Mamata Banerjee was fuming over central government’s  sapient exercise to use investigative machinery against her government to corner her before the 2019 polls, a few months back she declared that there will be no free pass to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for conducting raids or investigations in the state. According to reports, the CBI has full jurisdiction to carry out its searches, raids, investigations in the national capital but it can only enter other states with the “general consent” of their government. As the CBI probes moved further a climax happened when a couple of days back CBI team barged into Kolkata Police Chief Rajeev Kumar’s residence. The CBI team wanted to interrogate him allegedly for ignoring summons sent by the agency on two Ponzi scams. Further, the West Bengal Police on Sunday detained members of a CBI team which had arrived at the residence of Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar to question him in connection with Rose Valley and Saradha Ponzi scams.

BJP MP Saroj Pandey stated, “CBI is only doing its duty and such protests to save the Police Commissioner don’t suit a Chief Minister. Indian Constitution has varied rules for both the Centre and the State governments and everybody must follow the same. The CBI vs Kolkata Police issue should not be used for political mileage. West Bengal Chief Minister challenging CBI is constitutionally wrong.”

Amidst high political drama in West Bengal, Banerjee sat for ‘Save the Constitution’ dharna in Kolkata since last Sunday night, to protest against the CBI’s move to arrest the Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar from his residence.

While the voyeurism continues making the country stand still, Mamata browbeats the central government that the TMC will not fall to the feudalism and violation of the constitutional principles and the party will fight against the knock on the Constitution.

Back to her old days, Mamata was known for her militant style of politics. In 1993, when she was in youth Congress, she sat for strike in front of then chief minister Jyoti Basu’s office to protest against a rape case. She was then assaulted but her political journey thrived after that dharna incident.

In 1996, she did high drama in Alipore, Kolkata, to kill herself. In 2006, with the outbreak of the Singur-Nandigram movements, this seasoned politician with her 25-days hunger strike gained huge political mileage and she became the leader of the masses.

After the unexpected setback in the recent five state elections, the BJP is focussing hard to spread its wings in Bengal by igniting communal politics across the state. Amit Shah and PM Modi are targeting the TMC over corruption, health, education, and industries and misrule in the state. Mamata recently aborted three massive Rath Yatras of BJP in the state.

Her latest strike in solidarity with many parties including Congress, AAP, RJD, BSP boomeranged the Modi government and has put brakes to their aspirations. This will not only benefit the TMC leader to aggravate her political journey ahead of the 2019 elections but will also smash the BJP out of her way. Moreover, the political analysts believe, it’s high time that BJP must understand that their traits to use a communal prism for any regional issue for their political vendetta will not help the party to sustain in a long run.

CPI (M) leader Brinda Karat expressed, “Both BJP and Trinamool are responsible for this chaos in West Bengal. The CM is supporting the people who have looted the poor while PM Modi too failed to take proper action against corrupt people; all these fuss is buzzing around since the election is near.”

Mamata Banerjee fights against Political bullying by Centre

In a decision to neutralise the pressure between the Mamata Banerjee government and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Supreme Court walked the middle path by ordering Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar to make himself “available” for probe by the agency, which has in turn been barred from taking any coercive steps against the senior police officer, including his arrest. The CBI was pressing for his arrest which court has refused clearly as for appearing before CBI is concerned, he should do that. Court has asked for evidence against the Commissioner, which they couldn’t produce. Well, the court rightly asked him to cooperate in the investigation.

“One needs to notice that the BJP is trying hard to gain some seats in West Bengal. However, BJP is unlikely to win Bengal in near future. The reason lies in the mindset of the people of West Bengal that has been conditioned for communism over three decades of Communist rules followed by almost a decade of the ultra-communist rule of Trinamool Congress.”

However, people want to know why CBI and BJP government waited for four long years? Why is CBI being used now before elections? Is this because a drama was to be enacted in Bengal before the election? Amit Shah and Modi forgot that Didi will leave them behind in all sorts of Drama and that is what exactly happened; she arrested the CBI officers and sat on strike in protest. The CBI came with an intention to arrest Bengal police officer and landed in jail. By doing this protest, Mamata has flagged her supremacy; all the Opposition leaders supported her. It’s high time the BJP needs to realise that making Mamata powerless is not so easy. To avoid trouble or mud-slinging, the court went to the extra length of scheduling the meeting between Kumar and the CBI at “neutral” Shillong and not anywhere in West Bengal, least of all in politically-charged Kolkata, where Banerjee was holding a dharna claiming the attempt to arrest of Kumar on the night of January 3 as an instance of high-handedness by the Narendra Modi government. The case was taken up on a priority basis by the court. The CBI found that some of the documents handed over to the CBI by Kumar were doctored. The CBI summoned him, but he did not come. The cell phone of Sudipto Sen (main accused in Saradha scam) was returned to him by the SIT. Call records were incomplete and discrepancies were seen in the number of the calls. Information on who called and to whom, are missing. The call records were doctored. The CBI has also filed a contempt petition. The charges made in it are “far more serious”. Whenever a case is handed over to the CBI, it is always transferred after the local police did some initial investigation. In 90 per cent of these cases, the local police had handled the investigation badly and the CBI has never tried to prosecute the local investigating officers ahead of prosecuting the main offense. Probably, this is the first time. If this precedent is accepted, any police officer can arrest his predecessor for negligence or malice in half investigated cases handed over to successors. Whatever may be the justification, why raid on a Sunday that too at odd hours with dozen police officers? Doesn’t the same standard apply to others? How do you ill-treat a government employee? Political drama has reached new heights! The BJP is doing all so it can take over West Bengal. The CBI officials came in without papers which is not permissible. The CBI must follow federal guidelines. In the chit fund case, the CBI is investigating after the Supreme Court has transferred the case to the CBI. The CBI after having tried many a times to obtain some documents and seek clarifications on the earlier investigation from members of the SIT is attempting to meet the concerned State officers in person.

So far, Mamata Banerjee and all those concerned people with this case were co-operating, then why all of a sudden things went wrong? One needs to notice that the BJP is trying hard to gain some seats in West Bengal. However, BJP is unlikely to win Bengal in near future. The reason lies in the mindset of the people of West Bengal that has been conditioned for communism over three decades of Communist rules followed by almost a decade of the ultra-communist rule of Trinamool Congress. The long years of Communist thinking have transformed the mentality of the people of Bengal to such an extent that they are proud to be what they are. I remember, before 2014, there was nothing called BJP in the politics of West Bengal. It was considered to be a non-Bengali party and that had the support of only non-Bengalis living in Bengal. It’s all changed. Although, I must say that the wind hasn’t yet turned in favour of the BJP. The Saradha and Narada cases were the main weapons of the BJP against the incumbent government. The BJP will win quite a good number of Lok Sabha seats in the 2019 general election (mostly from urban areas, can’t say about rural Bengal), but the party can never make it to the power.

Majority of the people cited the minority appeasement by TMC as the main reason for derogatory law and order situation in WB. However, what can a party do where nearly 30 per cent are Muslims? I do not consider this as an appeasement, just fallacy of democracy. In a democracy, the number is the ultimate thing. Can we say all the US government are White, English Speaking, and Christian appeaser? There are 70 per cent White, English Speaking, Christians and obviously, the policies have to be aligned with their will, no matter how bad it is. However, in WB, Muslim growth is not because of State politics, rather it is Indian politics. During partition, no Hindu Bengali wanted to exchange Hindu dominated (70 per cent) Khulna and Jessore, the heartland of Jute production (then the largest industry) with Muslim dominated Murshidabad, Malda, and Dinajpur. It was done completely to create a bridge to North East India. So it is disheartening to see BJP’s comment about minority appeasement and communistic mindset of Bengal people and government. Forgetting that, Bengal had to take all the damage to ensure India’s security and integrity.

Bengali population did not take it by choice, it is rather forced upon. Maybe this is the reason that the communists ruled this state for so long.

Saradha scam involves big political names including Himanta Biswa Sarma, Mukul Roy, etc. Both were on the CBI radar until they joined BJP and soon after their inclusion into BJP, fuss around their involvement in scam got sidelined automatically. If PM Modi wanted to take action against the scamsters, he shouldn’t have welcomed those corrupt leaders into the team. This brings BJP’s credibility in fighting against the corruption under question! If PM can shelter its own corrupt leaders, then, Mamata’s dharna to ‘save the democracy’ should not be translated wrong. I have witnessed many Bengalis who have no malignation for the Muslims; Bengal is one state where instances of communal violence are reported the least.

Mamata Banerjee sent the Communists home after 34 years by positioning herself as Lefter-than the Left. There is an entire generation of Bengalis who have grown up in a Leftist school of thought. Forget shifting the Bengali mind to the Right; it is a huge task, if not an impossible one to attract the Bengali voter to policies of a Centre-of-Left party like the Congress. They are not fighting against any party there; they are fighting against an ideology those generations of Bengalis have grown up with. Let’s see How Mamata can stop BJP in West Bengal and How Modi will create space for its party in such adverse conditions!

Develop currency-identifying app for visually challenged: HC to RBI

BHC

The Bombay High Court Tuesday asked the Reserve Bank of India to think about developing a mobile phone application that could help visually challenged persons identify the denomination of various currency notes in India.

A bench of Chief Justice Naresh Patil and Justice NM Jamdar also directed RBI to expedite its ongoing project to develop a hardware-driven device that will help the blind identify Indian currency denominations.

The bench was hearing a petition filed by the National Association of the Blind (NAB), claiming that the new currency notes and coins were difficult to distinguish by touch, and sought directions to include distinctive features in the new coins and currency notes.

The RBI, however, informed the court that the new currency notes in India of the denomination of rupees 100 and above, already had “tactile markers and embossments” to help the visually challenged ascertain the denominations of such notes.

It also submitted that it had already issued tenders for the hardware-driven device.

But the bench suggested that the authorities examine currencies of western nations to check the features included in them to help the visually challenged.

“What about mobile-based software applications? America has some such apps. You can look into developing something similar,” the bench said.

It has now granted four weeks to RBI to look into its suggestions.

Clear all hurdles for smooth trial in Malegaon case: Bombay HC to NIA

BHC

The Bombay High Court on Tuesday directed the National Investigating Agency (NIA) to “clear all hurdles” in the 2008 Malegaon blast case and ensure that the trial proceeds “smoothly”.

A bench of Justices A S Oka and A S Gadkari noted that over 20 applications and appeals had been filed in the high court by various parties on varied grounds in the case.

As a result, the court had to sift through voluminous paperwork and over 4,000 exhibits, it said.

“How’s the court expected to clear these appeals in time if parties keep filing applications. We are certain most of these applications and pleas might even be frivolous,” the bench said.

“As a prosecuting agency, it is your (NIA) duty to ensure that all hurdles are removed and the trial in the case goes on smoothly,” it said.

The bench was hearing an appeal filed by Sameer Kulkarni, a co-accused in the case, challenging a 2017 order of a special NIA court, which permitted the use of photocopies of statements of witnesses and confessions of accused as secondary evidence in the case.

During a previous hearing, the bench led by Justice Oka had observed the special court should not have allowed the use of photocopies since there was no evidence to prove that they were authentic copies of the original, certified statements.

On Tuesday, the bench reiterated that the use of photocopies without any verification was wrong in law.

It told NIA counsel Sandesh Patil that the NIA should have pointed out the problem to the special court then and there and taken the correct legal stand by not relying upon the photocopies.

“You (NIA) are a premier agency. You have been constituted for a special purpose. Therefore, it was your duty to take the correct legal stand,” the bench said.

It is likely to hear the NIA’s justification, on use of photocopies as secondary evidence, in the next hearing on February 11.

In January 2017, the special court had permitted the use of photocopies after the NIA submitted that some files containing original witness statements and confessions of accused under section 164 of the Criminal Penal Code had gone missing and could not be traced.

The agency had pleaded at the time that since these statements could not be traceable and the proceedings of the case were conducted on a regular basis, the copies of the original be taken on record.

The case relates to a blast near a mosque in Malegaon, a town about 200 km from here in north Maharashtra, when an explosive device strapped to a motorcycle went off, killing six people and injuring over 100 on September 29, 2008.

Those are James Gunn’s films: Waititi as he says no to directing ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3’

galaxy 1Taika Waititi has ruled himself out from taking over the directing duties of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3”.

The future of the third part took a hit after Disney sacked director James Gunn from the project last July when his old offensive tweets resurfaced on social media.

Gunn was in the middle of writing the script for the third film when he was fired from the job.

After Gunn’s removal, a number of fans had called upon Waititi to take over as the director. He received universal acclaim for giving a new lease of life to Marvel’s “Thor” series with the 2017 blockbuster “Thor: Ragnarok”.

Waititi is also a fan-favourite director mostly due to his witty humour and quirky responses.

According to Indiewire, the 43-year-old New Zealander, however, is not in a mood to step into Gunn’s shoes for the third part of “Guardians of the Galaxy”.

“Nope. Not doing that movie,” Waititi told reporters during the Television Critics Association press tour.

“I’m hanging out with (Marvel) still. Talking about new stuff, but I don’t know what that might be yet. I want to do another movie,” he added.

Waititi said he “didn’t really” have a conversation with Marvel for “Guardians of the Galaxy”.

“For me, those are James Gunn’s films. Going into something like that with his stamp all over his films, would be like going into someone’s house and saying, ‘Hey, I’m your new dad, and this is how we make peanut butter sandwiches now.’ It feels kind of awkward,” he added.

Mamata calls off dharna

mamata

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday called off her dharna against the CBI attempting to question the city police chief in ponzi scam cases.

Calling off her sit-in on its third day, Banerjee said that she was doing so after consulting leaders of major opposition parties and following a favourable court order.

She had been sitting on the dharna since Sunday night at the Metro channel in Esplanade area, the spot where she had held a 26-day fast against the acquisition of farm land for the Tata Motors small car unit at Singur in 2006.

Opposition leaders like Chandrababu Naidu of TDP, Tejashwi Yadav of RJD and Kanimozhi of DMK had visited her at the dharna spot.

The Supreme Court had earlier in the day directed Kolkata police commissioner Rajeev Kumar to appear before the CBI and “faithfully” cooperate into the investigation of cases arising out of the Saradha chit fund scam, while it making it clear that he will not be arrested.

To avoid all unnecessary controversy, the apex court also directed the commissioner of Kolkata police to appear before the investigating agency at a neutral place in Shillong, on such dates as may be fixed by the probe agency.

Gadkari calls for removal of misconceptions about Sanskrit

783951 gadkariUnion minister Nitin Gadkari Tuesday said those who love Sanskrit should try to remove the misconceptions prevailing in the society about this ancient language.

Gadkari was speaking at the inauguration of the New Academic Complex and Guruji Golwalkar Gurukulam at Kavikulaguru Kalidas Sanskrit Vishwavidyalaya, Ramtek.

“Even today, there are misconceptions about Sanskrit among many people. Sanskrit lovers should work towards removing these misconceptions,” he said.

Gadkari also said that during his visit to Iran and Germany, he realised how popular Sanskrit was in these countries.

“During my visit to Iran, the president of Iran had apprised me that Persian language came from Sanskrit…When Prime Minister Narendra Modi and I went to Tehran, we came to know about the ‘Sanskrit chair’ in Tehran University…Also how much research is being done on Sanskrit and Ayurveda in Germany as compared to India,” the minister added.

“It is a special responsibility of Sanskrit lovers to spread the knowledge of this language among the common people,” he said.

India bids to host next hockey World Cup

hockey

India are among the six countries that have presented bids to host the next edition of the hockey World Cup, the International Hockey Federation (FIH) announced Tuesday.

India have proposed conducting the event for either men or women in the January 13 to 29, 2023 window, which has also been preferred by Australia and New Zealand. India have hosted the men’s World Cup thrice, the latest being last year in Bhubaneswar.

Spain, Malaysia and Germany have proposed organising the event in the July 1 to 17, 2022 window. “Bidding countries had to indicate until the deadline of 31 January 2019 also their preferred time window, either 1-17 July 2022 or 13-29 January 2023,” the FIH said in a statement.

FIH will now start the evaluation process of the bids and its Executive Board will make the final decision on both hosts in June this year.

“FIH is glad to have received such strong bids. This confirms how appealing our events are,” FIH CEO Thierry Weil said.
